Reports are coming in fast and furious from NYC Disinfonauts about the breakup of the ongoing actions in downtown Manhattan today. Numerous advocacy and citizens’ action groups came together beginning on Saturday to protest the ongoing consolidation of wealth from citizens to corporations, using the backdrop of the financial district to attempt to gain the attention of the national and international news media, located a scant 40 blocks north fo their efforts, but the media blackout continues.

Taken from the Adbusters / OWS website Occupy Wall Street:

Three hundred spent the night, several hundred reinforcements arrived the next day and as we write this, the encampment is digging in for a long-term stay. Now, it is crucial for everyone from all over the world to flock to the encampment.

Ernest Hemingway’s Final Days and the FBI

Ernest HemingwayHemingway biographer A. E. Hotchner’s article in the New York Times details the rapid decline of Ernest Hemingway during his final years. Institutionalization, self-doubt and paranoia came to a head on July 1, 1961 when the author took his own life.

Hemingway’s depression and instability has been well-documented, but what is interesting is that the FBI’s monitoring of his phones, correspondence and activities contributed to his sense of fear and paranoia.

This could be the rare case of someone who’s paranoia about “being watched” is actually due to the fact that he/she is actually being monitored. A. E. Hotchner writes:

EARLY one morning, [on July 1st], while his wife, Mary, slept upstairs, Ernest Hemingway went into the vestibule of his Ketchum, Idaho, house, selected his favorite shotgun from the rack, inserted shells into its chambers and ended his life.

There were many differing explanations at the time: that he had terminal cancer or money problems, that it was an accident, that he’d quarreled with Mary.

Silver Manipulation By JP Morgan And U.S. Fed?

In yesterday’s New York Times, William D. Cohan refines what was once a confusing and fringe theory about JP Morgan and HSBC’s involvement in silver market manipulation into a very plausible scenario, tying in the cloak and dagger elements of the story with the currently unfolding class action lawsuits in several states.

Once again, the Xtranormal.com platform is being put to good use to elucidate exactly what’s happening:

Each segment has information that I found useful, especially the fact that there is actually no physical silver left in circulation — nice touch. Part II is here and part III available here.

Part IV is here, and after the creators accidentally deleting the original voices, the bear in the overalls is now sounding strangely like John Lennon.

Another source of information and a more detailed breakdown on basic market manipulation and arbitrage is available here. The site that appears to be the sponsor/creators of the Xtranormal videos silvergoldsilver.blogspot.com is less clear, but has information as well…

The American Military’s New Fiefdom: Egypt

With the American military as its greatest benefactor, the Egyptian military has assumed control of the day-to-day functions of government, but which direction will this force take and who under whose auspices are members of the Egyptian military operating?

FMF funds totalled 1.8 B in FY 2009, who do you think is in charge?

FMF funds totalled 1.8 B in FY 2009, who do you think is in charge?

Is this move towards military rule a remnant of the previous administration’s new domino theory in the middle east or the first decisive step in the new administration’s new “plan” for the region? The Project for the New American Century spent many years strong-arming an already pliant Bush administration into increasing military aid to regions like the middle east, but only to regimes it could “work with“.

Consider this excerpt from diplomatic cables addressed to a General Schwartz from 2009:

Your visit will fall on the anniversary of the April 6, 2008 nation-wide strike protesting political and economic conditions.

This Just In: World Ending (Again) On May 21

The End is Nigh (again)I know you are waiting in anticipation for the end of times on December 21, 2012, but I have some bad news: according to several poorly designed websites, the Day of Judgment and the Rapture will begin on May 21, 2011.

Hopefully you can adapt your 2012 contingency plans to prepare for the arrival of Jesus this spring.

You can get your fill of this latest (and some would say greatest) hysterical prophecy here.

And as is always the case with your high-quality Doomsday prophecy sites, the website was optimized for Internet Explorer.

The Power of the Internet: Hundreds of WikiLeaks Mirror Sites Are Now Live

As of late Sunday, over 200 WikiLeaks mirror sites have come online and several free speech and hacker activist groups have taken on the role of intermediaries for the endangered Swiss site.

The NY Times article is here and more information on how to support the site via Datacell available here.

It’s only a matter of time before any number of large organizations / governments make a move to cripple this site, which is only beginning to show how useful this new format of information dissemination can be.… Read the rest

Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson Dies In Thailand

Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson, 1955-2010

Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson passed away in his sleep on November 24, at home in Bangkok, Thailand.

A creative and social visionary far ahead of his time, I will let the well-written obits from the Guardian and Independent sum up his life’s achievements.

One highlight from his commercial career as a graphic designer:

Occasionally, the two worlds collided, as when he attempted to convince McCartney that his album Tug of War should have a cover depicting a naked male body hanging from a noose; the former Beatle declined.

United States Is Officially A Banana Republic

Banana USA In a recent opinion piece in the New York Times, Nicholas D. Kristof reels off some key statistics in confirming what most Americans have suspected for years —the United States has now become the largest banana republic of it’s kind, with the largest slice of income going to the smallest group of oligarchs.

The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976.

As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

Not really breaking news, but he includes several helpful links to recent studies demonstrating the emotional toll of striving to achieve the hyper-riches of the Bushes next door, through higher divorce rates and forced moves to hunt down the more lucrative positions.

Moe Tucker: Tea Party Member, Patriot

The Velvet Underground in 1966, with Tucker pictured on bottom-right.

Noted percussionist and original member of the Velvet Underground, Moe Tucker has recently been pursued by mainstream media for “her support of the Tea Party movement”. Left-wing and right-wing media and politicians have seized upon her statements and a brief appearance on a local news broadcast (a year and a half later) to celebrate or decry her positions and use her as a pawn in their respective arguments, but both sides are ignoring the truth of her message, which is the pressing need for a true third party option in the United States.

She does, in fact support the Georgia politicians that comprise the local Tea Party, but with a close parsing of her comments and viewpoints what you find is a very straightforward approach to reforming the bloated government and endemic corruption the American people are seeking today.

Moe Tucker is not a right-winger, just looking for representative democracy (from the news video clip):

My anger stems from the unbelievable (criminal!) waste of money on pork and earmarks.
