Resident Discovers Home Was Once Serial Killer’s ‘Torture Chamber’

Silent screams

This is one of those incidents where it’s better not to know. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

via Phantoms and Monsters

How would you react to the news that your home was once used as a torture chamber by a serial killer?

It sounds like a made-for-TV movie, but instead it’s a real life nightmare for one St. Louis woman. It’s a typical North County ranch house on a tree-lined street.
Catrina McGhaw signed the lease without worry. Her section 8 voucher covered $810 in rent. Until a family member told McGhaw to check out a cold case documentary about serial killers airing on the A&E Network.

McGhaw is living in the same Ferguson, Missouri house serial killer Maury Travis used as a torture chamber. The landlord even gave her the dining room table; the same one from the crime scene photos.

“When she showed us the house, she said you can have this table if you want,” McGhaw said.

The Truth About Conspiracy Theories Is That Some Require Considering

Seal of the Islamic State in Iraq and the LevantAs an example of a conspiracy theory that he deems worthy of consideration, Patrick Cockburn writes at The Independent “For instance, did Isis kill the Israeli teenagers to trigger a war?”:

The Greeks tell a story against themselves about their tendency to believe in conspiracy theories. They relate how God decided that he would give every nation as a gift a special national characteristic. On the appointed day, representatives of the nations of the world entered the divine presence and were handed their gifts. The Americans received optimism, the French elegance, the British stoicism, the Russians courage, the Iranians cunning, and so on.

The Greek delegation was delayed and arrived late just as the other nations were leaving. God apologised and explained to them that he was sorry but he had already given away the most desirable characteristics and there were none left. The Greeks were enraged and protested furiously, shouting “so you too, God, have joined the plot against us as we always expected you would.

Men Mistake Corpse for Mannequin, Take It to Dump

From Flickr.

From Flickr.

This week in weird news: two workers cleaning out a man’s house mistake his corpse for a mannequin and take it to a dump with other garbage.

via metro.co.uk:

Workers Israel Lopez, 50, and Adam Hines, 30, told authorities they were tidying the house in Spring Hill at the request of the landlord when they came upon the corpse in the garage.

The pair cut it down, believing it to be a mannequin, before hauling it to the local rubbish tip where a landfill worker realised it was a body and called the police.

‘Both individuals as well as the property owners believed the lifelike mannequin was a distasteful Halloween-like hoax left by the former renters,’ Hernando County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

‘They cut the mannequin down, placed it on top of a pile of garbage in the back of the pick-up truck and proceeded to the landfill.’

Hernando County Sheriff’s officials said on Thursday that 33-year-old former tenant Jeremy Witsoth apparently committed suicide several weeks ago in the property, and that the body was ‘in a state of decomposition similar to mummification’.

The Cult of Aleister Crowley Lives On

NOTE: This article first appeared on July 20, 2014 on the Baltimore Post-Examiner. It has been republished with the author’s permission.

Aleister_Crowley,_wickedest_man_in_the_world“It was sex that rotted him. It was sex, sex, sex, sex, sex all the way with Crowley. He was a sex maniac!”- Vittoria Cremers

John Lennon, Timothy Leary, Iggy Pop, the Jonas Brothers and the Rolling Stones’ rock group all were influenced in one way or another by him. He was into sex, ceremonial magic, yoga and the occult, like no other so-called “spiritual seeker” of his time. His name was Aleister Crowley and he was British to the core. His motto was: “Do What Thou Wilt shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law, love under will.”

Crowley followed his own mantra right to the very end of his Christianity-hating, drug-abusing and higher consciousness-seeking life. If you want to know what Crowley looked like in his prime, check out that famous cover of the Beatles’best-selling album – Sgt.Read the rest

Editorial Position of the New York Times: Thumbs Up for Gaza Slaughter

By Abba Solomon and Norman Solomon

Over the weekend, the New York Times sent out a clear signal: the mass slaughter of civilians is acceptable when the Israeli military is doing the killing.

Under the headline “Israel’s War in Gaza,” the most powerful newspaper in the United States editorialized that such carnage is necessary. The lead editorial in the July 19 edition flashed a bright green light — reassuring the U.S. and Israeli governments that the horrors being inflicted in Gaza were not too horrible.

From its first words, the editorial methodically set out to justify what Israel was doing.

After 10 days of aerial bombardment,” the editorial began, “Israel sent tanks and ground troops into Gaza to keep Hamas from pummeling Israeli cities with rockets and carrying out terrorist attacks via underground tunnels.”

The choice of when to date the start of the crisis was part of the methodical detour around inconvenient facts.… Read the rest

Russians Have Mastered the Art of Embalming the Dead

V. I. Lenin, 1920 {{PD-US}}

An article from BBC a few years ago outlines the art of the long-term embalming of the dead. The Russians have mastered this in an effort to keep Lenin’s body pristinely preserved. Once a day they must soak Lenin’s hands and face in a special solution and wash his entire body in the solution once a week. Am I the only one who thinks this is just a tad creepy?

via BBC:

Ilya Zbarsky, who was a member of Lenin’s embalming maintenance team at the Research Institute for Biological Structures in Moscow, told the BBC in an interview in 1999: “Twice a week, we would soak the face and the hands with a special solution. We could also improve some minor defects. Once a year the mausoleum was closed and the body was immersed in a bath with this solution.”

Such was the reputation of the Russians in the field of body preservation that Vietnam’s former leader Ho’s body was said to have been flown to experts in Moscow every year for a refresh.
