Al Qaeda Mag Urges Attack on Koch Brothers, Buffett, Bloomberg

Has Al Qaeda finally found a propaganda strategy that will appeal to the 99% of Americans who aren’t billionaires? NBC News reports that the CIA-created organization is encouraging jihadists to attack the likes of the Koch Brothers (which for the sake of clarity, we do not support despite the Kochs’ and other one-percenters’ obnoxious behavior):

A notorious al Qaeda magazine is encouraging lone-wolf terrorist attacks on U.S. economic leaders, including Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg and Warren Buffett.

The list in Inspire magazine also included industrialist brothers Charles and David Koch, internet entrepreneur Larry Ellison, and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. A prominent economist was also on the list but asked that his name be withheld. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke was named, though not Janet Yellen, who succeeded him.

Also pictured was Jim Walton, one of the heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune, although he was misidentified in the caption as his late father, Sam Walton.

C.I.A. Cash Ended Up in Coffers of Al Qaeda

The front page main headline of today’s New York Times reads “C.I.A. Cash Ended Up in Coffers of Al Qaeda” as if it was a surprise. Does the Times not recall that it was the CIA that created Al Qaeda in the first place? Here’s the “shocking” story:

In the spring of 2010, Afghan officials struck a deal to free an Afghan diplomat held hostage by Al Qaeda. But the price was steep — $5 million — and senior security officials were scrambling to come up with the money.

They first turned to a secret fund that the Central Intelligence Agency bankrolled with monthly cash deliveries to the presidential palace in Kabul, according to several Afghan officials involved in the episode. The Afghan government, they said, had already squirreled away about $1 million from that fund.

Within weeks, that money and $4 million more provided from other countries was handed over to Al Qaeda, replenishing its coffers after a relentless C.I.A.

Cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo: Should We Nominate Them for The Darwin Awards?

On Wednesday night, Jon Stewart said something during his opening monologue on The Daily Show which has continued to bother me and nag at my conscience: “Our goal tonight is not to make sense of this because there is no sense to be made of this.” There is plenty of criticism which has been leveled against both Stewart and Colbert in the past, but I find his unwillingness to acknowledge the underlying factors which contributed to this slaughter to be particularly disturbing. Earlier today, I came across this superb article by Maria Bustillos, titled “How Much Did We Need This Blasphemy?” I can only hope that Stewart gets a chance to read it, and that he might consider amending his monologue with something a little more thoughtful and nuanced:

It is unsurprising in the extreme that the most hawkish, pro-Iraq War, pro-Bush and anti-Islamic conservatives are now falling all over themselves to defend Charlie Hebdo.

New Email Release Shows: Peter King Demanded an Investigation To Find Journalist’s Sources Like Peter King

By Marcy Wheeler

On May 7, 2012, then Associated Press reporters Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo broke the story of a thwarted al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) underwear bomb plot. Within a day, several news outlets — including ABC NewsLos Angeles Times, and New York Times – reported that the culprit was actually a Saudi agent.

On May 9, 2012, Representative Peter King called for an FBI investigation to determine who leaked details of the plot to the AP.

I’m calling on the FBI to do a full of investigation of how this was leaked, who’s leaking it. And also the CIA to do an internal investigation.

This came from such a small circle.  Nobody in Congress knew about it. My understanding is very few of anyone in the FBI even knew about it. And yet so much of it was leaked to the Associated Press a week ago, and now someone’s leaking like a sieve.

Washington’s Al Qaeda Doesn’t Exist and Never Did

Al-Qa’ida Training ManualThomas Mullen writes for the Washington Times Communities that “History is repeating itself. Islamic fundamentalism is the new communism. The difference is that the U.S. is no longer capable of squandering its resources for decades whacking moles. It’s time to start playing the game smart, before America loses it for good.”:

For twelve years, the Bush and Obama Administrations have promoted a narrative about the War on Terror. It has changed slightly in superficial ways, as when President Obama gave it a new name, but the crux of the narrative has not changed. The United States is fighting a war against a worldwide terrorist organization called al-Qaeda, formerly headed by über-terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Americans are led to believe that this organization has a single mission against the United States and is directed by a hierarchy of terrorist leaders, all reporting up to a senior command located somewhere in Afghanistan. Many of the lawmakers and cabinet personnel who promote this narrative likely believe it themselves, at least to some degree.

Human Demonology: Occupy Daath, or The Missing Protagonist

From P. Emerson at Modern Mythology:

…the Cop Show has only three characters–victim, criminal, and police person–but the first two fail to be fully human–only the pig is real. Oddly enough, human society in the eighties (as seen in the other media) sometimes appeared to consist of the same three cliche/archetypes. First the victims, the whining minorities bitching about “rights”–and who pray tell did not belong to a “minority” in the eighties? Shit, even cops complained about their “rights” being abused. Then the criminals: largely non-white (despite the obligatory & hallucinatory “integration” of the media), largely poor (or else obscenely rich, hence even more alien), largely perverse (i.e. the forbidden mirrors of “our” desires). – Hakim Bey – Boycott Cop Culture

Welcome to the apocalypse

Could we draw similar implications from the view of the US/Corporate empire being seen as the world’s police force? We all know the villain of this piece.… Read the rest

Al-Qaeda’s Top 22 Tips For Avoiding Drones Revealed

The find reveals that the terrorist network has been anticipating drone-based quasi-war by the United States for a long time. Via the Telegraph:

Found by the Associated Press in a building in Timbuktu, the ancient city in Mali occupied by Islamists last year, the document is believed to have been abandoned as extremists fled a French military intervention last month. Hidden inside a manila envelope, it is a Xeroxed copy of a tipsheet authored by Abdallah bin Muhammad, a senior commander of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

“These are not dumb techniques. It shows that they are acting pretty astutely,” said Col Cedric Leighton, a 26-year-veteran of the United States Air Force, who helped set up the Predator drone program.

The tips include:

Hide under thick trees.

Formation of fake gatherings such as using dolls and statutes to be placed outside false ditches to mislead the enemy.

Spreading reflective pieces of glass on a car or on the roof of the building.

Federal Magistrate Rules Against Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Iran in 9/11 Civil Case

Via CBS News:

Federal Magistrate Frank Maas has recommended that Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Iran be held liable for six billion dollars in a 2011 civil suit brought against them by relatives of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The assessment is symbolic in nature, as it will be impossible to collect damages. Still, at least some of the plaintiffs are pleased with the results:

Plaintiff Ellen Saracini …  is happy about Manhattan Federal Magistrate Judge Frank Maas’ recommendation Monday. Her husband, Victor, was the captain of one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center.

Bomber in Plot on U.S. Airliner Said to Be a Double Agent

Flag of Al-Qaeda in Iraq

Fantastic spy novel stuff, but for real (apparently) per this report in the New York Times:

The would-be suicide bomber dispatched by the Yemen branch of Al Qaeda last month to blow up a United States-bound airliner was actually a double agent who infiltrated the terrorist group and volunteered for the suicide mission, American and foreign officials said Tuesday.

In an extraordinary intelligence coup, the agent left Yemen, traveling by way of the United Arab Emirates, and delivered both the innovative bomb designed for his air attack and critical information on the group’s leaders to the C.I.A., Saudi and other foreign intelligence agencies.

After spending weeks at the center of the terrorist network’s most dangerous affiliate, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the agent provided critical information that permitted the C.I.A. to direct the drone strike on Sunday that killed Fahd Mohammed Ahmed al-Quso, the group’s external operations director and a suspect in the bombing of the American destroyer Cole in Yemen in 2000.
