By Seth Shostak, SETI Institute

The Conversation organised a public question-and-answer session on Reddit in which Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, explained why searching for intelligent life is so important and why we may soon find it.

Why are we continuing the search? For instance, isn’t it true that radio waves become almost indistinguishable from background noise just a few light years from their origin?

We can detect radio waves from billions of light-years away, and without a whole lot of trouble, either. The idea that they become indistinguishable from noise at some small distance is incorrect. With a big enough antenna, you can always find the signal.

But the broader point is that we now know two things that we didn’t know 20 years ago. First that planets, including ones that might be like Earth, are incredibly plentiful in the visible universe.… Read the rest

Lieutenant Gorman vs. the UFO

Just a little UFO story to brighten your Friday evening (though most of you probably already know this one).

via Mysterious Universe (click through to read the entire piece):

Lieutenant George F. Gorman, a veteran pilot in the North Dakota Air National Guard, has gone down in history as the subject of an amazing close encounter with a still-unidentified flying object. Taking place on the night of October 1st, 1948, Lieutenant Gorman’s encounter was one of the earliest reported pilot testimonies regarding a UFO, and remains a classic case to this day.

Lt. Gorman was a member of the North Dakota Air National Guard and upon returning to Hector airport in Fargo from a cross-country flight with his squadron, he decided to keep his F-51 Mustang in the air to log some night-flight hours. So while the rest of the squadron landed, Gorman stayed aloft, circling the town of Fargo.

Creationist Ken Ham calls to end space program because aliens are going to hell anyway

Thanks to the Raw Story, we now know that aliens are going to hell…

Creationist Ken Ham has said that the U.S. space program is a waste of money because any alien life that scientists found would be damned to hell.

“I’m shocked at the countless hundreds of millions of dollars that have been spent over the years in the desperate and fruitless search for extraterrestrial life,” Ham wrote in a Sunday column on his Answers in Genesis website.

Ham argued that “secularists are desperate to find life in outer space” as a part of their “rebellion against God in a desperate attempt to supposedly prove evolution.”

“Life did not evolve but was specially created by God, as Genesis clearly teaches. Christians certainly shouldn’t expect alien life to be cropping up across the universe,” he continued. “Now the Bible doesn’t say whether there is or is not animal or plant life in outer space.

260 Foot Crater Has Mysteriously Formed In Siberia

An unexplained hole has formed on Siberia’s Yamal Peninsula. The crater has formed in a specifically gas-rich area, the name of which actually translates to the “end of the world.”

via i09:

An expedition to the crater has been organised by the Yamal authorities. The team includes two experts from the Centre for the Study of the Arctic and one from Cryosphere Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

….

According to the Siberian Times, initial reports and images were suspected to be fakes, but the new images taken by Russian engineer Konstantin Nikolaev suggests it’s very much real. The feature is thought to have formed about two years ago.

Scientist have posited a number of theories to explain the crater, though it’s not likely to have been caused by a meteorite impact, nor does it exhibit the features of a sinkhole. One website claims that it’s evidence “of the arrival of a UFO craft” to Earth.

Buzz Aldrin Discusses His Apollo XI ‘UFO Encounter’

AldrinOne of the most famous astronauts, Buzz Aldrin, just did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) and predictably one of the questions was about UFOs. Here’s what Buzz had to say:

Q: Do you believe in aliens and what are the sightings you saw aboard Apollo 11?

A: On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world – it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And i feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels.

Pope Francis: Yes, Aliens Can Be Roman Catholics, Too

alien

PIC: Chinese Govt

Yes, Your Holiness, but what about the Xenomorphs, Predators, and  Body Snatchers? Will the acid-blooded, gene-stealing, and crab-faced among us be denied holy communion?

Little green men from outer space can be Catholics too!

Pope Francis, bending over backwards to strike an inclusionary tone for his church, joked that he’d welcome Martians into the fold and baptize them.

“Green men, with a long nose and big ears, like children draw,” Francis told worshipers during Mass at his modest Casa Santa Martha residence within the Vatican.

“If tomorrow, for example, an expedition of Martians arrives and some of them come to us … and if one of them says: ‘Me, I want to be baptized!’ what would happen?”

The down-to-earth Argentine pontiff said yes, of course, the spacemen should be embraced and treated as equals, according to reports by Vatican Radio and AFP.

Humanoid UFO Occupants

Adam, Eve, and Elohim (Raëlism)

[disinfo ed.’s note: the following is an excerpt from: Unconventional Flying Objects: A Former NASA Scientist Explains How UFOs Really Work by Paul R. Hill.]

Only a couple of major points will be made about the humanoid UFO occupants. This section will therefore be brief. However, the subject is well worth more study than can be devoted to it in a single section or in an entire book. The reader is advised to make a study of this subject on his own for the double reward of basic education plus fascinating entertainment. Here is surely a case where truth is stranger than fiction. Only by the digestion of considerable occupant data can anyone get the proper feel for, and a balanced view of, the entire UFO panorama.

EXAMPLE XVII-AI. THE SCARECROW

Anatomy of a Phenomenon (Vallee 77) reports the following story that took place in the French countryside on September 26, 1954:

The little dog began to bark and howl miserably.

Why is the Vatican Searching for Aliens?

PIC: Lewis Francis (CC)

PIC: Lewis Francis (CC)

Is there any theological motivation in the search for life beyond earth? Or is this just the academic bent of our Jesuit pope being felt early in his papacy?  Is it a terrible pursuit of heresy or worse, the work of the Devil?  Or is the Vatican searching for some greater inspiration for humanity?

The last time the Vatican was moved to pursue a momentous astronomical discovery was in 1580 to reform the Julian calendar.  It was known that the equinoxes and solstices had drifted some distance off from true, and Pope Gregory XIII sought a reform to respect the traditional Easter celebration date as set by the Council of Nicaea in 325.  The Gregorian Tower was ordered erected in the Holy See and stocked with the finest instruments of the day.  Jesuit astronomers were able to refine the length of the year from 365.25 days to 365.2425 days (a reduction of about 10 minutes and 48 seconds per annum or <0.002%).  To compensate for the calculated discrepancy, a Papal Bull decreed that all calendars would skip 10 days.  The day of Thursday Oct 4th 1582 on the Julian calendar was immediately followed by the day of Friday Oct 15th 1582 on the new Gregorian calendar, and Easter has been when it’s supposed to be ever since. However, does the pursuit of the discovery of extraterrestrial life have a practical end such as that for calendar reform?… Read the rest

Surgeon And Preeminent Alien Implant Proponent Roger Leir Dies

leirOpenMinds.tv eulogizes one of the only doctors specializing in the treatment of those suffering from alien-implanted objects in their bodies:

His interest in extraterrestrial-related phenomena emerged in his early childhood. His desire to find answers related to this enigmatic subject spawned a quest lasting nearly twenty years. Dr. Leir, a Podiatric Surgeon, became fascinated with alleged alien implants after removing a foreign object from a patient’s foot in 1995.

He formed a non-profit organization called A & S Research Inc. to investigate these anomalous objects. He and his surgical team performed fifteen surgeries on alleged alien abductees, resulting in the removal of sixteen objects they believe are alien implants.

Dr. Leir had struggled with various health issues in recent years. The official cause of death is still unclear.

Growing Up with John E. Mack

JOHNMACKShould be noted that the day after I posted my critique of Carl Sagan’s The Demon Haunted World, in which I defended the work of the late Harvard psychiatrist John E. Mack, Aeon magazine posted an interesting article by Alexa Clay about growing up with him as her surrogate step dad:

“But as a kid largely ignorant of grander sociological forces, aliens were only one thing: scary. They had large black eyes and androgynous forms. And they were real — like ghosts and witches and monsters. In daylight, I was sceptical (the good little rationalist), but night-time brought with it a tide of magical thinking. I used to lie in bed and worry that maybe I would be abducted. I would even make supplicating promises of better behaviour in the hope of bartering with these outsiders — ‘I’ll be good, just leave me alone.’ In my secular progressive household, aliens offered a moral disciplining authority, an invisible spectator to police my actions.… Read the rest
