The media did cover attacks on *insert country here*. You just weren’t reading it.

In the aftermath of the Paris attacks, social media users took to their keyboards to complain about Western’s society disregard for attacks in other, non-Western countries.

“Where was the media outrage for the attacks in Kenya or Beirut?” Well, it turns out the media did cover these attacks. We just weren’t paying attention.

Emma Kelly via Medium:

But in the aftermath of the Paris attacks, many people have taken to Twitter and Facebook to complain about why 147 people being killed by militant gunmen at Garissa University College in Kenya didn’t get as much coverage as Paris.

“Why isn’t the media covering this?” I saw several Facebook posts exclaim, while sharing a link to a BBC News story on the tragedy.

a) The media did cover this. You are sharing a BBC News link to the story.

b) A quick Google search will show that it wasn’t just the BBC who covered it.

Black Kids Get Less Pain Medication Than White Kids in ER

Doctor examining child, circa 1970s

Researchers have found that black children suffering from appendicitis tend to receive less pain medication than white children.

Maggie Fox via NBC News:

Black children with acute appendicitis — a clearly painful emergency — are less likely than white children to get painkillers in the emergency room, researchers reported Monday.

And nearly as troubling, only about half of any of the kids got painkillers, even though they’re strongly recommended in cases of appendicitis, the researchers found.

“Black patients with moderate pain were less likely to receive any analgesia, and black patients with severe pain were less likely to be treated with opioids,” Dr. Monika Goyal of the Children’s National Health System in Washington and colleagues wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Pediatrics.

What’s to blame? Probably a combination of an unwarranted fear of opioids such as morphine and fentanyl, combined with unconscious bias against African-American kids, experts said.

Daily Beast Revealed as Propaganda Rag

Shards of Truth in MH17 Investigation (But not at Daily Beast)

Doing what the Dutch investigation has so far declined to do – smear the separatists and Russia – the “Daily Beast” comes up with a belated hit piece, adding exactly nothing new, but taking the opportunity to repeat the US propaganda line…

‘How can you tell it’s a smear job,’ you ask?

The one link to any opposing ideas goes to a discredited piece of obvious disinformation, that infamous Photoshopped picture of an attacking plane [above]. The Daily Beast uses the smarmy jibe, “as some Russian media claimed,” to pretend they’ve actually looked at both sides of the debate. They have not, and will not.

My response there won’t post, so I’m annoyed. Perhaps they have my email and/or IP address on their list as well. But their site won’t put it through, not in Chrome, Opera nor Microsoft Internet Explorer.… Read the rest

Fear is the Mind-Killer

via Humanity Plus Magazine:

Anxious people tend to perceive their world in a more threatening way. That is, the more anxious a person is, the more likely they are to notice threatening things around them. This is called the threat bias.

Some researchers believe that the threat bias makes it harder for people to get rid of anxiety disorders because they get stuck in a loop – they feel anxious, they start noticing threatening things in their environment, and this in turn makes them even more anxious.

However, the threat bias isn’t just something that people with anxiety disorders experience. Everyone can have trouble keeping worrying thoughts and feelings of anxiety out of their minds. And there are things you can do to make it easier for your brain to inhibit worrying thoughts.

How Mass Media Manipulates Public Opinion

Newspapers-20080928Exposing the bias inherent in all media is always a priority for disinformation editors, so we really enjoyed this roundup of examples of media manipulation by Fred Burks at Examiner.com :

“Media manipulation currently shapes everything you read, hear and watch online. Everything.”
— Forbes magazine article on mass media influence, 7/16/2012

The influence of the mass media on public perception is widely acknowledged, yet few know the incredible degree to which this occurs. Key excerpts from the rare, revealing mass media news articles below show how blatantly the media sometimes distort critical facts, omit vital stories, and work hand in hand with the military-industrial complex to keep their secrets safe and promote greedy and manipulative corporate agendas.

Once acclaimed as the watchdog of democracy and the political process, these riveting articles clearly show that the major media can no longer be trusted to side with the people over business and military interests.

Fox News: Westboro Baptist Church a ‘Left-Wing Cult’

Pointing out Fox News’ editorial bias is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel, and almost not worth noting anymore. Still, examples like this do an excellent job of illustrating the “news” network’s willingness to sacrifice fact in favor of its national agenda as an arm of the Republican party.

The caption from this screenshot describes the notoriously homophobic fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church as a “left-wing cult”. Left-wing as compared to Fox News, maybe, but not in any normal sense of the term. The writer also takes pains to describe church leader Fred Phelps as a “Democrat”. It should be noted that Phelps was born and raised in the Mississippi of the 1940s. At that time, the southern branch of the Democratic Party was extremely conservative: staunch supporters of segregation and the preservation of “the Southern way of life”. It just didn’t mean the same thing as it does today.… Read the rest
