The Seven Worst International Aid Ideas

cluster111Matador Network on the “worst attempts at helping others since colonialism”. There’s the inexplicable — entrepreneur Jason Sadler’s 1 Million T-Shirts campaign, which involved producing and shipping a million t-shirts for donation to strife-affected (but presumably clothed) Africans for no apparent reason.

But the actual worst may be the United States’ scattering the hills of Afghanistan with food packets — intended for hungry Afghan children — identical in appearance to the cluster bombs also scattered by the U.S. through the same regions:

Each yellow BLU-97 bomblet is the size of a soda can and is capable of killing anyone within a 50 meter radius and severely injuring anyone within 100 meters from the detonation. A Humanitarian Daily Rations (HDR) package contains a 2,000 calorie meal.

It was inevitable that Afghans coming across the yellow packages in the field would confuse the two. Children in particular — with no English and little idea of what a BLU-97 is even if they did — would investigate the yellow containers and try to pick them up, with devastating consequences that an Air Force general described as “unfortunate.”

No More Taco Bell Until Abortion Ends (Video)

Site editor's note: if you have been following this political/internet/media explosion you may find this recent story posted to disinfo.com in December as an interesting footnote to the outcome. These people will enjoy no more burritos until unborn babies are no longer terminated. Until Abortion Ends is a perplexing and to some extent inadvertently amusing trend in which people pledge to give up various things "until abortion ends". (Although I assume they actually mean "until abortion becomes criminalized".)

Donors Pledge $4.3 Billion For Child Vaccinations In Poor Nations

PoliodropsA case of good humanitarians. Via Reuters:

International donors led by Britain and Bill Gates pledged $4.3 billion on Monday to buy vaccines to protect children in poor countries against potential killers such as diarrheal diseases and pneumonia.

“But every 20 seconds, a child still dies of a vaccine-preventable disease. There’s more work to be done.”

The funding should allow more than 250 million of the world’s poorest children to be vaccinated by 2015, helping to prevent more than four million premature deaths, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) said.

“Today is an important moment in our collective commitment to protecting children in developing countries from disease,” said Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who attended the pledging conference in London.

Meet DONA: The Panhandling Robot (Video)

Cyriaque Lamar writes on io9:
The notion of a panhandling robot may sound like pure fiction, but roboticists in South Korea have worked together with MIT Media Lab to create with DONA, a motion-sensing bot built to solicit street donations. DONA's makers are donating the robot's earnings to fund education in the Ivory Coast, so you won't feel suckered dropping some won in its collection cup.

Charity Group Pays Drug Addicts To Use Birth Control

714px-Ortho_tricyclenInstead of paying their way into rehab, Projective Prevention decided that spending money on birth control was a better choice. BBC reports:

A US charity says it has paid 26 female drug addicts in Britain to have contraceptive implants or coils fitted.

Project Prevention told BBC Radio 5 live it had given the women initial payments of £60 and a UK charity now wanted to trial a similar scheme.

The charity had controversially offered to pay addicts £200 to be sterilised when it launched in the UK in October.

But it has now said no women took up that offer because the British Medical Association did not back the proposal.

Instead, the charity said, it is focusing on paying addicts to use birth control.

How Monsanto And Evangelical Christian Organizations Hijacked The Taxpayer Money Intended For Haiti

only-solution-to-haitiThe Awl has an infuriating exposé detailing how Billy Graham’s evangelical organizations are sucking up U.S. tax dollars intended for Haiti. With the country in tatters and foreign aid flowing, Christian groups such as Graham’s are on a mission to “Christianize” Haiti and wipe out Haitian voodoo culture. Agribusiness behemoth Monsanto is another private player taking advantage of the crisis to expand their empire:

Overall, Haiti has become one of the greatest money laundering operations in history, an island engine turning public funds into private profits.

What’s more, U.S. taxpayer dollars are, against Presidential directive, being funneled from the United States Agency for International Development to Billy Graham’s charities for use in Christian proselytizing—all while building Sarah Palin’s 2012 campaign army.

“At that time, they were not open to the Gospel, and now they are,” said “Festival of Hope” director Sherman Barnette, of the difference in Haiti before and after the earthquake.

Billionaires Donate Half Their Wealth To Charity

Ever wonder what billionaires do with all their money while the nation is struggling in debt? Bill Gates and Warren Buffett launched The Giving Pledge earlier this year, beginning this expensive trend. NBC reports:

More than three dozen of America’s wealthiest individuals and families have joined Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in agreeing to give away at least half their fortunes to charity.

The announcement was made Wednesday by The Giving Pledge, an effort officially launched by Gates and Buffett earlier this year to persuade the richest people in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice, either during their lifetime or after their death.

In addition to Buffett and Gates — America’s two wealthiest individuals, with a combined net worth of $90 million, according to Forbes — 38 other billionaires are taking the give-it-away pledge. They include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, entertainment executive Barry Diller, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, energy tycoon T.
