‘Brain Dead’ Might Not Mean the Brain is Dead After All

LiveOrganDonationI’m an organ donor, but stories like this one (and that one) sure give me the creeps. I’m happy if my spare parts can help other people, but I’d like to think that I’ll be done with them before they come to take them out.

Via Newser:

An intriguing new study out of Montreal might redefine our concept of being “brain dead.” Researchers for the first time think that the brain remains active even in patients whose EEG lines have gone flat, reports the Los Angeles Times. The study sprang from an unusual case in Romania in which a patient lapsed into a coma, then got put into a deeper coma by doctors. Much to their surprise, doctors then detected cerebral activity in his hippocampus, never before seen in such a deep coma. The University of Montreal study replicated the feat with cats under heavy anesthesia.

British Man Wakes Up From Coma Speaking New Language

Ever feel as if you might accomplish far more in a deep, dreamless sleep than awake and walking around? The Telegraph reports:

Alun Morgan, 81, was evacuated to Wales during the Second World War but left 70 years ago. During his time there he was surrounded by Welsh speakers but never learned the language himself. He left the country aged 10 and lived his life in England and recently suffered a severe stroke.

But when Mr Morgan regained consciousness three weeks later, doctors discovered he was speaking Welsh and could not remember any English. It is thought that the Welsh Mr Morgan heard as a boy had sunk in without him knowing and was unlocked after he suffered the stroke. Mr Morgan is now being taught to speak English again.

Mitt Romney’s Coma

Photo: United States Congress (PD)

Did you know that Mitt Romney was in a coma for a few days during the `60s?  No, not due to drugs.  Lou Colagiovanni gives the commonly accepted story for the Examiner:

Before Mitt Romney was a politician he was a Mormon missionary in France during the 1960s. It is a little known fact that while he was spreading the gospel through rural France in 1968, Mitt Romney was involved in a head-on collision. Romney was driving, and one of his passengers was killed.

This was first reported by The Boston Globe in 2007 when they told the story of Mitt Romney almost dying in Bernos-Beaulac, France while driving a Citroen DS. Romney, who was 21 at the time, was driving from Pau to Bordeaux as a chauffeur for Duane Anderson the French Mormon mission president.

Romney tells the story of going around a curve and being struck at full speed by a Catholic priest named Albert Marie.

‘Comatose’ Man Was Actually Awake For 23 Years

This is a pretty horrifying fate…reminds me of the video for the Metallica song ‘One.’ From the Telegraph:

A Belgian man diagnosed as being in a coma for 23 years was actually conscious the whole time. Rom Houbens was simply paralysed and had no way to let doctors caring for him what he was suffering.

“I dreamt myself away,” says Houben, now 46, who was misdiagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state after a car crash. Doctors and nurses in Zolder deemed him a hopeless case whereby his consciousness was considered “extinct.”

When he woke up after the accident he had lost control of his body, “I screamed, but there was nothing to hear,” he says.
