Did The Republican Party’s Vilification Of Muslim Americans Just Cost It The Presidency?

You reap what you sow. It seems hard to believe in the wake of the invasion of Iraq and widespread conservative hostility towards Muslims in the United States, but prior to 9/11, American Muslims were a solidly Republican voter demographic. Via Ray on the Royals, baseball blogger Rany Jazayerli pointed out yesterday that, fascinatingly, ex-Republican Muslim voters would have won the election for Mitt Romney:

In the 2000 election, approximately 70% of Muslims in America voted for Bush; among non-African-American Muslims, the ratio was over 80%. Four years later, Bush’s share of the vote among Muslims was 4%.

There is simply no way that I can justify voting for a party that denies the very legitimacy of my identity as an American. Nor can most other members of the American Muslim community, who just happen to be clustered in swing states like Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. If Nate Silver is right, not only will Romney lose the election, but it can be safely said that if the Muslim community had voted the same way they had in 2000, he would have won.

Virginia Man Kills Himself And His Family Over Fear Of Obama’s Reelection

A wealthy defense contractor and devout Christian from suburban Washington, D.C. fatally shot his wife, his children, and himself over fears of Barack Obama’s winning a second term, the Daily Mail reports:

Albert Peterson shot dead his wife and two sons hours after going to church because he dreaded the thought of Obama winning the election, a family friend has revealed.

A confidante of the family for the past 25 years has spoken to MailOnline about the strength and grace of the Peterson family, as well as the torment that plagued Albert which drove him to shoot dead his wife Kathleen and his two sons Christopher and Mathew at their suburban home in DC on Sunday.

A history of mental illness and a growing fear of Obama winning a second term in the White House took its toll on the mind of Mr Peterson, a wealthy defense contractor, the friend said.

Mitt Romney Would Pay 0.82 Percent In Taxes Under Paul Ryan’s Plan

Commentators have wondered whether the pick of the economically extreme Ryan as a running mate was an error in calculation, but it seems quite pragmatic to me — should Romney win the presidency, and be succeeded by Ryan, Mitt may end up effectively never having to pay taxes again. The Atlantic crunched the figures:

Under Paul Ryan’s plan, Mitt Romney wouldn’t pay any taxes for the next ten years — or any of the years after that. Now, do I know that that’s true. Yes, I’m certain.

Well, maybe not quite nothing. In 2010 — the only year we have seen a full return from him — Romney would have paid an effective tax rate of around 0.82 percent under the Ryan plan, rather than the 13.9 percent he actually did. How would someone with more than $21 million in taxable income pay so little? Well, the vast majority of Romney’s income came from capital gains, interest, and dividends.

Paul Ryan Is The Most Politically Extreme Vice Presidential Pick In At Least A Century

Mitt Romney’s newly minted November running mate Paul Ryan is known for a radical right wing outlook — at the core of his agenda is the slashing of taxes for the rich, ending Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and any sort of sort of social safety net as we know them, and gutting all functions of the federal government with the exception of the military. But just how extreme is he? Via the FiveThirtyEight blog at the New York Times, statistics wiz Nate Silver explains that by a large margin, Ryan holds the most far-from-center voting record of any Congressperson to run for vice president in at least a hundred years, if not ever:

Based on his Congressional voting record, the statistical system DW-Nominate evaluates him as being roughly as conservative as Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. (The statistic does not provide scores for governors and other vice-presidential nominees who never served in Congress.)

By this measure, in fact, which rates members of the House and Senate throughout different time periods on a common ideology scale, Mr.

Lost Classics Of Right Wing Folk Music

CONELRAD keeps alive the memory of one of the strangest of pop music subgenres--conservatism-themed folk music artists of the 1960s who were promoted in an unsuccessful attempt to counter the Bob Dylans and Peter Paul & Marys of the scene. Perhaps most fascinating is Janet Greene, a former children's television personality in Ohio who was discovered by the right wing organization Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, which had Greene record a series of propagandistic songs and marketed her as the "anti-Joan Baez".  The most entertaining work in her catalogue is "Poor Left Winger", a tale of woe concerning a naive girl seduced by a communist beatnik "bearded singer" mocked for his "espresso", "demonstrations", and dirty shirt:

Rand Paul’s Endorsement of Mitt Romney

Via Media Roots: In a surprising turn of events last Thursday, Senator Rand Paul came out on the Sean Hannity show on Fox News to make a special announcement: his endorsement for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The announcement was a blow to the Ron Paul liberty movement who are still rallying for Ron Paul until the very end of the game. Despite his statement of concession in a recent newsletter, many die hard Ron Paul fans are still hoping that there's a chance for him to win the nomination with unbound delegates in Tampa. But what does it say when his own son comes out to endorse his rival? Many are theorizing that the endorsement signifies Rand Paul "selling out" to the war mongering establishment that has worked to shut out his father's libertarian ideals for so long. Others are stating that it's simply a political strategy to bring the liberty ideas into the mainstream. I explore the issue in three segments below for RT TV, all with varying guest opinions and theories:

Human Foot Mailed to Canadian Governmental Headquarters

Conservative Party Of CanadaReports the AP via the Guardian:

A human foot has been mailed to the headquarters of Canada’s Conservative party and another body part discovered when police intercepted a second suspicious package, according to police in Ottawa, the national capital.

Police were called shortly after a receptionist opened a blood-soaked box at the headquarters of prime minister Stephen Harper’s party. The first officers to arrive saw what appeared to be bloodstains on the package and immediately called in hazardous material specialists. They opened it outside and found the foot.

Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative party of Canada and not a specific person. Harper’s office is not located at the party headquarters.

As the investigation developed Ottawa police said on Tuesday night that they had intercepted a second suspicious package containing another human body part…
