Researcher Claims Historical Google Maps Reveal Crop Circles Are No Hoax

Evidence that crop circles were popping up a long time ago, before anyone talked about them? Via the Birmingham Mail:

An Aussie historian believes he has buried forever the lie that crop circles are the work of hoaxers – by unearthing Black Country images of them dating back to 1945 and beyond. Greg Jefferys has also uncovered evidence of the phenomenon in scientific documents dating back to 1880.

“This discovery proves that claims by various artists to be the sole creators of crop circles are themselves a hoax,” he says. “It just goes to show that the circles remain unexplained.”

Jefferys, who cut his teeth locating shipwrecks, used Google Earth’s new 1945 overlay – images of places taken 68 years ago – to make the breakthrough. He spent more than 300 hours scouring the English countryside using the technology – and found a large number of crop circles.

But there is one question Jefferys’s laborious research has failed to answer: if crop circles are not a hoax, what are they?

I’m still not sure what to make of the crop circle enigma. Human invention? Alien interaction? Mother Earth crying out? Who knows? From the Daily Mail:

This is the latest intricate crop circle to appear overnight in a British wheat field. The mysterious pattern resembles the ancient Tibetan Buddhist symbol of an ‘endless knot’: a complex loop of lines and circles used to illustrate the eternal flow of time. The symbol has many meanings but because it has no beginning and no end, many people who follow the religion say it represents the wisdom of Buddha.

Crop Circle Appears in Wheat Field in Rural Washington…Again

Residents in rural Wilbur, WA were mostly amused to discover that a crop circle had appeared in a local wheat field. The circle is described as resembling Mickey Mouse or a four leaf clover and covers approximately one acre. This isn’t the first time that it’s happened, either:

Crop circles have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades, and this is not the first one in Lincoln County. Similar circular patterns were left in crops in the Wilbur area in 2010 and in 2008 or 2009, Geib said.

Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer for the Grand Coulee dam, hadn’t heard about the latest crop circles but said the previous one was no cause for alarm.

“It seemed to be highly unusual,” Brougher said. “As I recall from a couple of years ago, there was no good explanation of how they got there.”

Most people believe that crop circles are man-made, perhaps with planks and rope.… Read the rest

Crop Circles In The Year 1678?

911347 The phenomenon of “crop circles” became widely known in the 1980s, but the eerie Old Crop Circles site collects similar reports and references from earlier periods — in some cases, far earlier. The oldest is a woodcut news pamphlet titled “The Mowing Devil”, from Hertfordshire, England, 1678. It tells how a farmer refused to pay a laborer to tend his field, and swore that he would rather have the Devil himself mow it. The following morning, a strange, large-scale pattern had been cut into his field:

The artifact pictured left is a pamphlet dated August 22, 1678, entitled The Mowing-Devil: Or Strange NEWS out of Hertford-shire. It takes the form of a primitive news report, which started life as a woodcut — a type of early printing plate created by carving into a wooden block and then inking it.

The image depicts a demon, scythe in hand, felling crop stems in what seems like a systematic fashion.

Crop Circles In New York City

What On Earth Inside The Crop Circle MysteryThe best crop circle documentary yet, Suzanne Taylor’s What On Earth? has landed in New York with special screenings all week at Manhattan’s Quad Cinema (Wednesday April 27th’s evening screening features Suzanne, Alex and Allyson Grey and Daniel Pinchbeck, moderated by disinformation‘s Gary Baddeley).

The New York Times just reviewed the film, calling it:

A cheery, chummy documentary about the pastoral patterns inaccurately described as crop circles…

… Merging homey interviews with photographs and film of the hundreds of varieties of patterns (which pop up mysteriously overnight and are found all over the world), the film makes no pretense of objectivity or analysis. Everyone on screen — most sporting little blue flowers in their lapels, like a club insignia — is convinced of an intelligence behind the designs.

The film’s main attractions, though, are the patterns themselves: fantastically precise whorls and curlicues, radiolaria and mandalas that drift across the screen like the endlessly reforming crystals in a kaleidoscope.
