Lizard Men, Reptoids, and Sleestaks: The Fear and Awe of Reptilian Humanoids

Probably like a lot of you, I grew up fairly obsessed with dinosaurs. There’s something improbable about these things that appeal to the imagination of children. The idea that not terribly long ago the Earth was dominated by animals that mirror in so many ways the dragons and other monsters of myth and fairy tale is somewhat magical: It’s as if the grown-ups who taught us about dinosaurs- teachers, scientists and others – have said, “Dragons and ogres and trolls are all make-believe, but we’ve not taken away all the monsters. Take heart: Here’s a nice book full of ferocious-looking beasts that’s okay for you to believe in. Study, even.”

One of my first experiences with dinosaurs in pop culture was watching Sid and Marty Krofft’s live action Saturday morning children’s show The Land of the Lost, a series chronicling the adventures of patriarch Rick Marshall, and his children, Will and Holly, as they attempt to escape the titular Land of the Lost, a parallel dimension that they’ve been trapped in via some kind of mysterious portal encountered on a canoeing trip.… Read the rest

Houston “Chupacabra” Sightings Could Be Real, Intentionally Bred Animal

chupaAre fantasy fans attempting to breed their own real-life mythical animals? Via the Houston Chronicle:

A recent sighting of the mythical chupacabra could be the result of exotic animal owners interbreeding their pets, according to a Houston animal control expert.

Two residents of the Doliver Point gated community near Gessner and Doliver claim to have seen giant footprints alongside Buffalo Bayou and say they have photos to prove it is the mysterious chupacabra.

Scott Black and David McKee took several photos of the animal Sunday, according to KPRC news. “It was very vicious, very long, longer than a human,” said Claude Griffen from Gotcha Pest control, who was brought into check out the photos. “It was a pretty big animal, very well fed.”

Houston animal control officials said they have heard of people trying to breed dogs that look like so-called direwolves from the TV show Game of Thrones.

Griffen said it’s not the first one he’s come across and asserts that people are deliberately trying to breed animals that match descriptions of these mythical creatures.

Winged Humanoid Creature Spotted In Chile

criatura_chile

Inexplicata has a translation of an item making the rounds in Chilean news:

On 29 September near Bustamante Park in Santiago’s downtown area, a strange flying creature was seen flying from one tree to another. Its size was estimated at around 2 meters tall and shaped like a manta ray.

Ignacio, a young man who was the witness, made his narrative available to journalist Juan Andrés Salfate on Canal La Red. Eyewitness testimony soon appeared in other places in Santiago. A witness named Sylvia confirmed the image of this human-looking “flying manta ray” in the Los Barrenchea Commune.

Incidents such as the above are recorded every so often in Santiago. In the Peñaloén Commune, over the past two years, IIEE has managed to secure similar accounts. Furthermore, we recall deceased journalist Osvaldo Murray, who wrote about the flying men who landed in the trees of the town of Juanita Aguirre in the 1980s.

American Creationists Searching For Living Dinosaurs In Africa

dinosaursVia the Institute for Creation Research, William J. Gibbons on his scientific expeditions to the Congo in search of the elusive surviving dinosaurs which he and some other creationists are convinced are hidden there:

Perhaps the most exciting prospect for the world of creation science is the possibility that dinosaurs may still be living in the remote jungles of the world. Evolution and its accompanying necessity of long ages of evolutionary development would be hard pressed to accommodate a living dinosaur. Such is the story of Mokele-mbembe, a creature that some scientists believe could be a surviving sauropod dinosaur. The one area today that would favor living dinosaurs is the vast and unexplored swamps of equatorial Africa.

Very little was heard of Mokele-mbembe until 1976 when herpetologist,
James Powell from Texas, traveled to Gabon to study rainforest crocodiles. Powell picked up stories from the Fang people about an enormous river monster called N’yamala, and a local witchdoctor called Michael Obang picked out a picture of the diplodocus from a book on dinosaurs as being a dead ringer for the N’yamala which he saw exit a jungle pool in 1946.

Is Huge Hand-Print In Nevada Cave Evidence Of Legendary Tribe Of Cannibal Giants?

handprint

The obvious follow-up question being, could a few still be alive and hidden in the desert caves? Who Forted? ponders:

Did two Bigfoot hunters stumble onto evidence of a long lost race of giant cannibals in a Nevada cave? They believe that their discovery of a huge, charred handprint backs up claims of legendary “Red-Headed Giants”.

In 1911 David Pugh and James Hart, two guano miners, were excavating a cave on the eastern side of Nevada when they discovered several sets of giant bones, remains which many now believe belong to the Si-Te-Cah, a storied Paiute tribe of red-haired cannibal giants. Legend has it that the last remaining giants were burned alive inside the cave thousands of years ago.

Pugh and Hart were more interested in harvesting guano than preserving history, and many artifacts were destroyed before the Museum of Anthropology and the University of California were contacted for a proper excavation.

Are Werewolf Reports Taboo Even for Cryptozoologists?

550660werewolfFriend of Disinfo Nick Redfern laments that cryptozoologists consider reports of werewolves beyond the pale in a short article posted to Mysterious Universe:

It’s sad to say that I have seen more than several cryptozoologists pour complete and utter scorn on 20th and 21st century reports of werewolves, even when they have never spoken to the witnesses or personally studied the cases at issue. And, I have personally witnessed certain elements of the paranormal crowd react in definitively defensive, arms-folded fashion when a suggestion is made that these beasts may simply be unknown animals, albeit of a pretty extraordinary nature.

Both camps need to lighten up, reconsider their stances, and think outside of the box. The fact is that there are more than a few creatures within the domain of Cryptozoology that have weird overtones to them, such as Mothman and Owlman, – hell, even Nessie and Bigfoot reports aren’t free of very high-strangeness, on occasion.

The Origin of the Bigfoot Legend

wood_whistler

Wood Whistler

via Today I Found Out

Stories of a giant, hairy creature that appears half man and half ape have existed in various parts of the world for many centuries. In fact, the only continent not to have stories of “wild men” is Antarctica. In the Himalayas, it’s the Yeti. In Canada, it’s the Sasquatch. And in the northwest United States, it’s Bigfoot. Bigfoot is described by believers as being between six and eight feet tall with a large forehead and pronounced brow, like a cave man’s, and a rounded, crested head like a gorilla’s. He is covered in brown or red hair and has enormous feet that are his namesake, with the biggest estimation at a whopping two feet long by eight inches wide. Some “witnesses” claim that the five-toed Bigfoot prints they saw on the ground were accompanied by claw marks (not unlike a five-toed, clawed paw print of a bear—but rational explanations aren’t as fun).

Rock-head! Man Thinks He Found a Bigfoot Skull

Wanna come out to the car and see my Bigfoot skull?

May says he’d be perfectly happy to allow scientists to examine his Bigfoot skull, but he wouldn’t want it to fall into someone’s hands “where it just sort of disappears.”

“I wouldn’t mind, I just don’t want to get it lost,” he said.

The Standard-Examiner sent a photo of the rock to several paleontologists for an initial opinion on May’s find.

In an email interview, paleontologist Kenneth Carpenter said what May found is interesting, but it definitely is not a fossilized skull.

“I’ll admit that it is the most head-like rock I have seen,” said Carpenter, director and curator of paleontology at Utah State University Eastern’s Prehistoric Museum in Price. “However, there is no doubt that the object is a natural phenomenon. Basically, it is just the odd way the rock has weathered.”

Carpenter said there are several key features of a real skull that are missing — eye socket, nose opening, and teeth among them.
