Alligator snapping turtles are somewhat common where I live, and growing up I learned to leave the hell alone. Grown-ups warned me and my friends that they could snap through broomsticks and fingers with ease, and called them “thunder turtles” because the story went that they would bite and hold on until thunder struck. Unless you’ve seen one in the flesh it’s really hard to understand how enormous and intimidating they are. The one in the picture is tiny, relatively speaking.
