Abraxas: International Art Journal for Esoteric Studies

Abraxas is a high-quality printed journal of esoteric art and culture, published twice a year, specializing in esoteric art and culture. Abraxas is a meeting point among academics, practitioners and curious readers. Abraxas publishes pieces that are clearly presented yet rigorous in quality, so that written scholarship can reach across specialisms and enchant and engage the non-specialist. The art we present is an eclectic mix of contemporary and ancient esoteric visuals presented in the form of interviews, features and critical essays. Abraxas aims to share and publicise the most up-to-date developments in magic and esotericism on all fronts, in research, practice and art. More information on the study of Western Esotericism by Prof. Wouter Hanegraff: http://www.esoteric.msu.edu/Hanegraaff.html

“Contributions for Abraxas #5 include an interview by Pam Grossman with Greek artist, Panos Tsagaris; an analysis of Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas by Silvia Urbini, a visual interpretation of the Dionysian mysteries by Arrington de Dionyso; a substantial essay from Shasha Chaitow on the grandfather of esoteric art, Joséphin Péladan; an introduction to the art of Michael Bertiaux by Ariock Van de Voorde; reminiscences by Caroline Wise of her friend Olivia Robertson (1917-2013), and much more.”

Marty and Michael in Math Magic Land

Is there an Occulted Numeric Language Embedded Within Our Culture?

Via Midwest Real

A visual representation of Pi to 10,000 digits.

I shan’t bullshit you my friends, I suck at math. If you forced me to do algebra with a gun to my head, the event could only end with my landlord having PTSD. I really wish that wasn’t the case, because numbers truly do fascinate me.Somehow, we can manipulate these immutable, immortal concepts in such a way that we’re able to extrude complicated objects into this world. Just take a look at all the amazing feats of engineering and architecture around you at this very moment that you’re taking for granted. It’s truly amazing, almost magical stuff. And it’s all there, at least in part, because of what we do with numbers.

Now that we’ve established that my mind is a burrito of mathematical ineptness and ignorant awe, perhaps I’m extra susceptible to being manipulated into being mesmerized by witnessing simple patterns, or mathematical slight of hand (we’ll get to that later).

Sangreal, The Cosmic Grail: The Cauldron of Lugh – Part 9

Sangreal_9_Cover“Is it that we had not yet demonstrated sufficient spiritual maturity to wield such power and additional millennia of training and testing was needed before we would be permitted to graduate to the cosmic level?”

“‘Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language, and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

“Go to, let us go down, and there confound their tongue.” -Elohim

In concluding last month’s article I quoted from 12th century Perlesvous describing the appearance of the Holy Grail: “The Grail appeared at the ceremony of the mass, in five different forms that none ought to tell. For the secret things of the sacrament should not be told openly, except by him given by God to tell them. King Arthur beheld all the changes; the last of them was a change into a chalice.”

This quote clearly highlights the protean nature of the Grail.… Read the rest

Randall Carlson – Cosmic Origins of the Holy Grail & Cycles of Catastrophe

Via SacredGeometryInternational.com

Randall Carlson is a professional designer and builder, student of Sacred Geometry and a long time Freemason. He is uniquely qualified to interpret the hidden meaning of the great masterpieces of mystical architecture. It is his aspiration to affect a revival of lost knowledge towards the goal of creating the new world based upon universal principles of harmony, freedom, and spiritual evolution. Randall emphasizes the cyclical nature of time and the periodic catastrophes responsible for the collective amnesia of our species. He returns to discuss Sangreal, The Holy Grail: Recovering the Cosmic Science of Antiquity, the connection to cyclical catastrophe and the onset of ice ages and warming periods in Earth’s history. We’ll discuss comets and panspermia. In the second hour, we speak more about grail symbolism and the mysterious red rain that came down over Kerala in India in 2001. We also talk about alchemical art and the plagues of Egypt as environmental catastrophic events.… Read the rest

Manly P. Hall Reveals the Stories in Our Stars (or, Astrotheology: On the Astronomical Origins of Myths)

Screen Shot 2014-01-01 at 8.50.31 AMMost people’s eyes glaze over at the mention of “astrology” these days. Mainly because the first things that spring to mind are spirituality-for-entertainment crystal gazers and a list of general-to-the-point-of-meaningless life forecasts next to the Sunday comics (and now, apparently, a divination system to compete with/outperform other scam artists on Wall Street). Manly P Hall isn’t interested in the horoscope-ified version either, but in examining how it was the ancients studied the stars and their locations, the significance of their movements, and mapping them in constellations. Also, how various myths are mapped to celestial (including planetary and solar) motions.

Hall distinguishes it here as “astro-theology,” and, being a more sophisticated take on the subject, I figured it would be appreciated by disinfonauts (and simply deserves a wider audience, as is).  Archetypes, deep symbolism, degrees of consciousness, the Solar Hero Myth (and its many iterations), how these thoughts still effect and pervade our lives – Hall covers a great deal.… Read the rest

Manly P. Hall Gets to the Heart of Homer’s “Odyssey”

mphall_89yearsYou won’t hear this interpretation in the storied halls of academia.

Manly P Hall – author, mystic, examiner of all things esoteric – teases apart the obscurities of Homer’s epic to reveal its secret meaning. Namely, what certain elements represent and how it relates to the inner life of man (mental/emotional/spiritual) and consciousness by and large.

Clocking in around an hour-and-a-half, it’s a bit of an undertaking – but it’s well worth the listen:

The Universal Energy Symbol / Sigil – by Richard Gordon

UniversalEnergySymbolThe Universal symbol / Sigil.
Copyright © all rights reserved, Richard Gordon 2013.
Since before the dawn of recorded history mankind has sought to define, connect, even harness the powers of the universe via the use of symbols or talismans. Many of these symbols have been used as a method of protection whilst others, such as the cross have been seen to be a direct link between themselves and their chosen god.

During the 1990’s I spent an extended period of time doing in depth study in regards to symbols and their meanings or origin. I remember thinking at the time that it was strange that there appeared to be very little out there that could be employed in the representation of the universal whole. Some 18 year or so later I returned to my original research and was surprised to find that there was still was no convincing universal symbol that had come into common use.… Read the rest

Sangreal, The Holy Grail: Recovering the Lost Science of Antiquity – Part 4

Sangreal_4That the legendary Holy Grail of western esotericism has a cosmic dimension of meaning has been the theme of three articles published in the pages of The Oracle previous to this month’s contribution. The Holy Grail story has intrigued the minds and piqued the curiosity of seekers of knowledge for centuries, without, however, yielding up either its secrets or a consensus of interpretation. We ended last month’s article with a quote from a modern exploration of the Grail mythos, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, a best seller in the mid 1980s that eventually served as the main source of inspiration for The DaVinci Code, a fictionalized popularization of certain aspects of Grail symbolism.

In last month’s article I wrote of the Language of the Birds, the secret language of Initiates, Alchemists and Adepts of the Mysteries. It could either be spoken or written. I described how it was based on the use of puns, homilies, synonyms, etymologies and plays-on- words that concealed secondary and even tertiary levels of meaning that only made sense to those with the keys to decipherment and the conceptual framework to make sense of the alternate meanings.… Read the rest

Sangreal, The Holy Grail: Recovering the Cosmic Science of Antiquity – Part 1

Here is the book of thy descent,
Here is the book of the Sangreal,
Here begin the terrors,
Here begin the miracles

The History of the Grail – 12th Century, Anonymous

In last month’s article, after a discussion regarding dragons and other symbols employed by ancient peoples to represent celestial objects, I wrote: “Literacy in this language of cosmic symbolism opens up a whole new domain of understanding about our human past on this planet . . .” In that article and in the two preceding I discussed close encounters between these celestial objects and Earth, emphasizing the destructive potential inherent in such occurrences. While there is a great deal more that could, and should be said about the role of cosmically triggered catastrophes throughout both planetary and human history, in this article I will call attention to the other side of the equation, and hopefully, in the process, shed some light upon one of the most enigmatic and powerful of all esoteric symbols—the Holy Grail.… Read the rest

Ritual Shamanism – The Drum and the Wand

Shamans_Drum“The wand as used in many modern day esoteric practices is in fact a symbolic drum stick, directionally beating our concentrated willed intent against the energetic surface of creational reality”

My personal involvement with shamanism started some 30 years or so ago whilst on what may appear at first sight to be a totally unrelated path.

At an early age I developed a deep interest in the mystical side of our nature, it was as if I was instinctively drawn towards anything that was different or had a freakish nature and was coupled the suspicion that there was much more going on in the world than met the eye. I would spend hours exploring the overgrown orchard and the abandoned farm that backed onto my parents property, the place seemed to be virtually alive with the spirits of nature who had reclaimed the land as their own.

As the years progressed I became ever more interested in the possibilities of our human potential.… Read the rest
