Via the Daily Dot:

A fourteen year-old Georgia boy has charged with housing and manufacturing explosive devices after police were tipped off by a series of instructional videos and helpful hints uploaded to YouTube:

The unidentified boy was arrested last Monday in Canton, Ga., after police found “several devices that appear to be pipe bombs inside [his parents'] residence,” according to assistant police chief Todd Vande Zande. He is believed to be the individual behind YouTube channel Blake6841.

Wondering who witnessed the country’s best-by-far pyrotechnics display this past weekend? New York City’s killjoy police officers, who held a private detonation of a year’s worth of confiscated illegal fireworks. At least they were kind enough to get the squelching of our joy on film:

It’s colorful, delicious, full of antioxidant properties and can now detect explosives. BBC reports:

The main chemical in the curry spice turmeric could be the basis for cheap explosives detectors, say researchers.

The curcumin molecule is already well-known in medicine for its anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties.

Now, research presented at the American Physical Society meeting suggests it could replace more complex solutions to spot explosives like TNT.

As it gathers molecules of explosive material in air, changes in its light-emitting properties can be measured.

This “fluorescence spectroscopy” is already employed in a wide array of sensing and analysis techniques.

This is an exclusive Media Roots Radio interview with Utah based documentarian Brett Smith, conducted by Abby and Robbie Martin on February 23, 2011. In 2006, Brett’s love of films drew him into taking a film class where he was required to make a 15 minute short. That 15 minute short later turned into 40 minute documentary called Hypothesis.

Hypothesis is a documentary that follows physics professor Steven E. Jones during a pivotal time in his life. In 2005, Jones went public with a theory about 9/11 that was so controversial, it resulted in everything from hate mail, threats, and even bribery to try to end his research. Despite the outside pressures, Jones vowed to never give up on his pursuit of the truth.
