Texas Gun Owners Stage Rally at the Alamo

Via NBC

“We are here to show that an armed society is a polite society.”  Not exactly the rhetoric of “gun nuts” or supposedly racist “tea partiers” but rather, a concise aphorism demonstrating the common sense wisdom of a sovereign philosophy.

Disinfonauts please meditate on this little slice of wisdom, “It is not right to hurt others, it is also not right to not be able to defend oneself.”  – Bodhidharma (patron saint of kung fu and karate)

Hundreds of gun-rights advocates, many toting rifles and shotguns, gathered early Saturday at the Alamo in San Antonio to rally in support of gun ownership and the right to bear arms.

The rally, called “Come and Take It San Antonio,” comes in response to what organizers called San Antonio police’s “disregard for Texas law and The Constitution.” Organizers said the police department has harassed gun owners and created a hostile environment for legal gun ownership.

Gun Crime Rates Are Actually Down in the United States

firearmsCrimes in which the perpetrator used a firearm are actually on the decline, according to the Pew Center. That doesn’t mean that it’s still not a problem, of course. In any case, most Americans think that “gun crime” is actually higher than it has ever been.

LA Times:

Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.

Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.

In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.

Skyrocketing Demand Leads To Bullet Shortages Across The United States

bullet shortageBetween the military, the police, and paranoid citizens, America is sucking up the supply of gun ammo faster than manufacturers’ factories can churn it out. Via Fox News:

Demand for guns and ammunition has cleaned out stores nationwide, leading to waiting lists and early morning lines outside of gun and sporting good stores for ammunition shipments. Common calibers routinely sell out within minutes of appearing on store shelves and prices have soared as much as 70 percent.

After the Newtown elementary school massacre, gun enthusiasts have packed stores, buying as many firearms and as much ammunition as they can find. Moves to expand background checks and limit firearm and magazine sales have added to the hysteria.

Ammunition manufacturers are struggling to make enough and have hundreds of millions of dollars in backorders. They’ve added hundreds of employees and equipment and increased overtime, and, in some cases, are running factories around the clock.

President Obama isn’t in any hurry to allow documents pertaining to the botched “Fast and Furious” gun-trafficking investigation see daylight.

Yahoo:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. Justice Department lawyer said on Wednesday that if a judge agreed to consider a Republican bid to get administration documents related to a botched operation against gun-trafficking it would prompt a flood of requests for courts to referee Washington political disputes.

President Barack Obama is resisting a congressional subpoena for documents related to how the administration responded to the revelation of the failed operation known as “Fast and Furious” on the U.S.- Mexican border. It has already turned over thousands of pages of documents about the operation itself.

Justice Department lawyer Ian Gershengorn told a hearing the matter was best left to the give-and-take of the U.S. government’s two elected branches, the president and Congress, and should not be a matter for the courts.

The attorney for a New York State man claims his client’s firearms license was revoked after the state learned he was on an anti-anxiety medication. Is this a sign of future things to come? Should the state be able to seize your firearms if you’re on certain medications?

Via LiveScience:

An attorney for an upstate New York gun owner claims his client’s permit to own firearms was suspended by state police because he received a prescription for anti-anxiety medication.

“It’s disconcerting to know that if your doctor prescribes you a psychotropic medication … that results in the state police trolling to pick up this information, and if you do have a gun license, it will be revoked,” Jim Tresmond, attorney and gun-rights advocate, told Buffalo news station WKBW.com.

Dad Receives Visit from Authorities After Posting Pic of Son with .22 Rifle on Facebook

Picture: Shawn Moore (C)

New Jersey resident Shawn Moore received a visit from authorities after posting a picture on Facebook of his eleven year-old son Josh holding a .22 rifle that had been given to him as a birthday present. I live in the Deep South, and being given a rifle or shotgun by your father is a common rite of passage in some families. I never had one as a kid, but most of my friends did, and I was the odd man out. In those families, the firearm was traditionally held by parents for safe-keeping and only brought out to use for target shooting or hunting under adult supervision. The South is still largely rural, and how to keep and maintain firearms is considered an essential skill for most boys – and some daughters.

I don’t know what life in New Jersey is like. I know that down here there’d be much outrage from political officials and private citizens alike if something like this happened.… Read the rest
