hate crimes

The University of Mississippi (“Ole Miss”) chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has been suspended following an incident in which a noose was placed around the neck of a statue of James Meredith on campus. A Confederate flag emblem was also placed on the statue. Three Sigma Phi Epsilon students stand accused of the incident. Each of them is 19 years-old,  and all three hail from Georgia. They have been expelled from Ole Miss, and university officials are pushing for them to be charged with hate crimes.

Meredith was the university’s first black student at the then-segregated university. His admission was met with riots on campus that had to be quelled by Federal Marshals and members of the National Guard. Two people died during the incident.
