French Town Overrun By 2012 Apocalypse Cult

Having produced the film 2012: Science or Superstition, I’m often asked where I plan to be on December 21, 2012, which as almost all disinformation readers surely know, marks the end of the current cycle of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Truth be told I have no special plans, but perhaps Bugarach in southwest France is as good a choice as any, and it’s only a few minutes from Henry Lincoln and Rennes-le-Château, whom I’ve been wanting to visit ever since we released Exploring the Da Vinci Code: Henry Lincoln’s Guide to Rennes-le-Château. MyFoxNY/Newscore reports:

Armageddon-fearing pilgrims were flocking to a village deep in the southern French hills after a countdown was started to the end of the world, which stood Thursday at a mere 729 days to go.

Followers of the Mayan calendar believe the mountain in the Corbieres hills overlooking the village of Bugarach, east of the Pyrenees, was endorsed by aliens as a safe place to survive the demise of civilization.

Disinfo Reviews ‘Voodoo Histories’ (And Discovers That We Are To Blame)

I recently caused something of a stir here on the disinformation® site when I posted a New York Times book review of David Aaronovitch’s Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History. Voodoo History I actually didn’t write anything to suggest how I felt about the book, and indeed I hadn’t laid hands or eyes on a copy at that time. The next day however, his publisher messengered over a great looking hardcover, so I cracked it open. Imagine my surprise at learning, on page 3, that it was us, The Disinformation Company, that was (at least partly) behind his animosity to so-called conspiracy theories. He writes:
“… in music and DVD chains across the United States and Britain, among the limited number of books on sale, the young browser is likely to come across oversize paperbacks with titles such as Abuse Your Illusions, You Are Being Lied To , and Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies. “Checking in at a rather substantial thirty dollars each, these books consist of bite-size essays by different authors dealing with myriad (and, frankly, random) subjects, from the oil industry to crime, via geopolitics....

Origins of The Da Vinci Code, featuring Henry Lincoln exploring Rennes-le-Chateau

The legendary Henry Lincoln, who many people credit with starting the whole bloodline of Christ theory that caused such a furor upon the publication of The Da Vinci Code, has taken to blogging. He now lives full time in Rennes-le-Chateau and his latest blog post relates his often hilarious interactions with tourists:

At Rennes-le-Château, I fear, change has become inevitable. But some changes, it seems, are beginning to spread confusion. I have, for instance, often been asked for directions to the Devil’s Armchair. My response is now frequently met with: “But I thought that was the Seat of Isis … !” (And vice versa.) Well … yes!

This seems to be one of the unlooked-for effects of the Da Vinci Code. The goddesses seem to be taking over. So … Isis now sits in the Devil’s Armchair … the Fourtou Cave has become ‘the Magdalen’s Grotto’ … and more than one excited visitor expects to be shown the house she lived in – or the cave where she was buried – or the garden she planted – or any other whimsical piece of wishful-thinking that you … they … anyone … may conjure up.
