Congressmen Say Their Own Personal Debt is OK, but not Government Debt

Flickr user: Images_of_Money (CC)

Ah, “elected” government, where hypocrites are paid to advocate for causes they may or may not even agree with, and legislate rules that they themselves don’t follow. And apropos of budget hysteria and economic terrorism being wrought against popular public programs, the trumped-up fears are not only false (the debt crisis is imaginary, and only 6% of the country is aware that the deficit is actually falling) but it’s no surprise to anyone that the ‘debt-fixing’ warriors don’t have the same view of their own debt as they do of the country’s, or yours.

As Josh Israel of ProPublica points out, fourteen of the most vitriolic enemies of vital programs themselves live with the personal irresponsibility of private debt (to the tune of millions).

These hypocrites include:

  • House Budget Committee Member Tom Rice (R-SC):Wrote: “At a time when hardworking American families are living off of a budget, the federal government should be no different.

New York Republican Who Voted Against Medical Marijuana Busted For Pot

The Wall Street Journal reports a pretty good example of political hypocrisy, with lawmaker Steve Katz, fresh off of helping defeat the legalization of medical marijuana in New York state for people who desperately need it:

A Putnam County assemblyman received a ticket for marijuana possession Thursday after he was stopped for speeding on the New York State Thruway.

Assemblyman Steve Katz, a 59-year-old Republican who voted no last year on a bill to legalize medical marijuana, had been traveling 80 mph on I-87 through Coeymans, N.Y., where the speed limit is 65 mph, state police said. During the speeding stop, police said a trooper noted the odor of marijuana and found Mr. Katz in possession of a small bag.

State police released Mr. Katz with a ticket and ordered him to appear in court on March 28. He didn’t immediately return a call for comment.

Major Movie Studio Employees Pirating Movies

Picture: Pirate Flag of Jack Rackham (PD)

Whoops! A classic case of “Do as I say, not as I do”, courtesy of some of America’s biggest movie studios:

Via TNW:

Well, this is awkward. TorrentFreak reports that workers at Hollywood top studios are illegally sharing movies on BitTorrent from IP addresses associated with their employers.

The site worked with Scaneye, a BitTorrent monitoring company, to reportedly compile data on what files are being shared from within the movie studios. It found a handful of movies and TV shows being distributed on BitTorrent from Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney.

Conservative Mormon Senator Busted for DUI

Conservative Republican Senator Michael Crapo (R-ID) was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after failing a roadside sobriety test. Crapo, a Mormon, has stated publicly that he abstains from alcohol.

A mea culpa has already been issued:

I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.

Who the hell says “I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance” anyway? A guy who probably isn’t going to have a political career for much longer, that’s who. Crapo, indeed.

Ron Paul Admits He Draws Benefits From The Social Security System He’s Working to Destroy

Okay, so the mask is finally off.  But honestly, it never really was much of a disguise, was it?  From Erin Mershon at the Huffington Post:

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) may rail against Social Security insolvency in the public eye, but that hasn’t stopped him from accepting the government checks.

The libertarian-leaning Republican and former presidential candidate admitted Wednesday that he accepts Social Security checks just minutes after he called for younger generations to wean themselves off the program, in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I want young people to opt out of Social Security, but my goal isn’t to cut,” he said.

The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein then asked Paul, “A bit of a personal question — Are you on Social Security? Do you get social security checks?”

Paul admitted he does, stating, “[It’s] just as I use the post office, I use government highways, I use the banks, I use the federal reserve system.

Microsoft Employs Many BitTorrent Pirates While Funding Anti-BitTorrent Startups

MicrosoftWrites Ernesto on TorrentFreak:
In recent weeks the anti-piracy antics of Microsoft have made the news on a few occasions. From censoring The Pirate Bay to funding BitTorrent poisoning startups, the software giant is determined to attack piracy head-on. But perhaps the company should make a start by educating its own employees first. In Microsoft’s offices around the world many company employees are using BitTorrent to download and share pirated movies. YouHaveDownloaded is a treasure trove of incriminating data on alleged BitTorrent pirates all across the world. The site, launched late last year, exposes what people behind an IP-address have downloaded using BitTorrent. This data was gathered from public BitTorrent trackers, and the founders released it to show how much information can be found on BitTorrent users who don’t hide their IP-address...

Penn Jillette Skewers President Obama on Hypocrisy and His Drug Use (Video)

Penn's Sunday SchoolVia Penn's Sunday School:
On a recent episode of his podcast, Penn Jillette unleashed his thoughts on the Obama administration's handling of the War on Drugs, calling President Obama's actions "beyond hypocrisy" regarding his own admitted drug use. Penn said: "He would have done hard fucking time! And if he had done hard fucking time, he would NOT be President of the United States of America, and he would NOT have gone to his fancy ass college, and he would NOT have sold books that sold millions and millions of copies and made millions and millions of fucking dollars, he would NOT have a beautiful, smart wife, he would NOT have a great job. He would have been in fucking prison, and it's not a goddamn joke!"

Mitt Romney Claims To Be “Severely Conservative”

It's like watching a robot self-destruct ... David Frum opines on CNN:
Mitt Romney ended a very bad week with a pretty good weekend. Tuesday, Romney lost two caucuses and a nonbinding primary to Rick Santorum. Saturday, Romney won the also nonbinding Maine caucuses and the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Four weeks from now, no one will remember the Maine caucuses. I'm guessing though that people will remember a phrase from Romney's speech to CPAC on Friday, in which he described himself as a "severely conservative" governor of Massachusetts.
