The Daily Show on Obama’s “Wisdom” in the “Ground Zero Mosque” Media Circus

Jon Stewart is a Stormtrooper "Yes we can ... but should we?" — Jon Stewart Politics is often defined as the "art of the possible." However it should also be defined as "you can't please all the people all the time." Especially the ones being idiots on the "ground zero mosque" media shitstorm. Thankfully The Daily Show's Jon Stewart (who recently George Lucas made a Stormtrooper) is on the money again about President Obama's mixed public comments regarding this non-story. I could not complete this post without mentioning the great Jon Oliver's commentary: "There is a difference, Jon, between what you can do and what you should do. You can build a Catholic Church next to a playground. Should you?"

President Obama Hosts Ramadan Dinner

What are you doing tonight? President Obama will be celebrating the Islamic faith. From The Hill:

President Obama will host an iftar — the special evening meal observed during Ramadan — on Friday night in the White House dining room.

Ramadan began on Wednesday and will end around Sept. 10.

Obama participated in a similar gathering last year.

Celebrations like iftar dinners “remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings,” Obama wrote in a statement Wednesday.

“Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity and racial equality … a reminder that Islam has always been part of America and that American Muslims have made extraordinary contributions to our country.”

The dinner comes amid a growing controversy over the proposed construction of an Islamic cultural center in downtown Manhattan, near the site of the World Trade Center.

New York Ad Depicting 9/11 Attacks Beside Mosque Approved

mosque_banner_100810bWhere would a religious/racial influenced debate be without advertisement? You know the ad sends a powerful message when you have to sue MTA to get it approved. Is there really an argument against an Islamic temple being close to ground zero when Masjid Manhattan mosque already exists a couple of blocks from the proposed site? From AP News:

New York City’s transit agency has approved a bus advertisement that depicts a plane flying toward the World Trade Center’s towers as they burn along with a rendering of a proposed mosque near ground zero.

The ad was paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an organization that opposes radical Islamic influence in the United States. The group’s executive director says she doesn’t find the ad offensive.

The group sued the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to demand it accept the ad, which was approved Monday.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz says the agency doesn’t endorse the ad’s views.

Ali Imron

Ali Imron

Will scaring children with colorful drawings teach them a lesson about terrorist recruits? From BBC news:

The only surviving perpetrator of Indonesia’s deadliest terrorist attack, Ali Imron, is an unlikely comic book subject.

But the story of his journey from young Muslim to convicted terrorist has been chronicled in a new comic book.

Some 10,000 copies of Ketika Nurani Bicara, or When the Conscience Speaks, will be circulated in schools and libraries from next month, in an attempt to warn the country’s youth of the dangers of Islamic extremism.

Ali Imron is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the bombing of the popular resort of Bali that killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists.

He escaped the death sentence because he repeatedly expressed remorse, and co-operated with police.

“From the time I was instructed to bring the bomb… there was already doubt in my heart.

Holy Wars

Directed by GNN co-founder Stephen Marshall (Aftermath: Unanswered Questions From 9/11), HolyWars was shot over a four year period in America, Britain, Lebanon, and Pakistan. The film follows a danger-seeking Christian missionary and a radical Muslim Irish convert, both of whom believe in an apocalyptic battle, after which their religion will ultimately rule the world. Tracking their lives from the onset of the "War on Terror" through the election of Barack Obama, HolyWars shows that even the most radical of believers can be transformed by our changing world. The movie is screening in Los Angeles and New York. For more information visit the Facebook fan page.

Aaron Cynic writes at Diatribe Media:

Newt Gingrich, like many other Americans on the far right, has a problem with Mosques, more specifically the planned Islamic community center near Ground Zero. This doesn’t come as a shock in the least, his reasoning (H/T Justin Elliott at Salon) is that there aren’t any churches in Saudi Arabia and also, New York already has Mosques, so we should take the Saudi’s lead on this one:

There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia. The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over.

Those Islamists and their apologists who argue for “religious toleration” are arrogantly dishonest. They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City.
