German Bank Worker Accidentally Transfers Nearly $300 Million By Falling Asleep On Keyboard

falling asleep on keyboardSomething tells me that the falling-asleep-on-keyboard mistake will eventually be how the world ends. Via FRANCE 24:

An obviously tired German bank employee fell asleep on his keyboard and accidentally transformed a minor transfer into a 222 million euro ($293 million) order, a court heard Monday.

The Hessen labour court heard that the man was supposed to transfer just 62.40 euro from a bank account belonging to a retiree, but instead “fell asleep for an instant, while pushing onto the number 2 key on the keyboard” — making it a huge 222,222,222.22 euro order.

The bank discovered the mistake shortly afterwards and corrected the error. The case was taken to court by the man’s 48-year-old colleague who was fired for letting the mistake slip through when verifying the order.

Woman Dies Of Heart Attack After Awakening At Own Funeral

JoniskisFuneralWhen someone miraculously returns to life at their own funeral, but then dies of shock at what’s taking place, is it perhaps best to continue on with the service as if nothing happened? The Daily Mail reports:

A woman died from a heart attack caused by shock after waking up to discover she had been declared dead – and was being prepared for burial. As mourning relatives filed past her open coffin she suddenly woke up and started screaming as she realized where she was.

New Postage Stamp Accidentally Features Las Vegas Statue Of Liberty

libertyBoing Boing notes USPS’s unveiling of a brand new Statue of Liberty stamp with “an illustration of the Lady Liberty replica at Las Vegas’s New York-New York casino as opposed to the real statue in New York Harbor.” (The image used came from a stock photography website.) Many details are different between the two.

It’s an example of how we are living in a state of hyperreality, in which symbols or images become more real to us than the original reality they were supposed to represent. Now, in the minds of millions of unaware people (and the government itself), Las Vegas’ fake, amusement-park statue has become the “right” one.

It’s difficult to hear your doctor say you have cancer. It’s even more difficult to hear how his nurse used the same needle for 2 months before using it to take your blood. Sky News reports:

More than 50 cancer patients will have to wait an agonising three months to find out whether they have been infected with HIV, after a NSW clinic used one needle on patients for two months.

The bungle occurred when a newly employed nurse mistakenly believed the Accu-Chek Multiclix, a device used to check blood sugar levels, automatically changed needles.

Dr. Michael Jones, chairman of the private radiology company PRP Diagnostic Imaging which runs the Gosford clinic, said the nurse didn’t realise she had to change the needle manually for each new patient.

Instead, the needle was left unchanged between November 28 and January 28, and used on 53 patients and two staff members.
