Author Reveals Profound Near Death Experience as Inspiration of Latest Novel

clover book“The main character in Andrew Clover’s latest novel has an accident, her consciousness splitting to revisit significant scenes in her past and to review her life. And this, he claims, happened also to him.”

In the latest podcast from The Eternities, the author discusses a near death experience during which he seemed to leave his body.

Clover tells how he tripped and knocked himself out “while running to collect his young daughter from a local bus stop. But instead of finding himself unconscious, he claims to have remained aware.”

“I could actually see my body in this puddle, and then I was just thinking, ‘The girls!’, and I was remembering my eldest daughter.” Suddenly, he found himself viewing her safely making her way home.

“And the next thing, I was back in my house and I could see my eldest daughter … she was fine. And I was in the living room and I could see my youngest daughter, lying on the sofa.

How To Trigger An Out-Of-Body Experience Using Video

out-of-body experienceOut-of-body experiences on demand? Gizmag reveals:

New research demonstrates that triggering an out-of-body experience (OBE) could be as simple as getting a person to watch a video of themselves with their heartbeat projected onto it. According to the study, it’s easy to trick the mind into thinking it belongs to an external body and manipulate a person’s self-consciousness by externalizing the body’s internal rhythms. The findings could lead to new treatments for people with perceptual disorders such as anorexia.

Most of us don’t experience OBE’s because our brains are constantly filtering information from all our senses to help us identify what we are and what we aren’t. For instance we know that our reflection isn’t actually part of us. However the processes that give us the feeling of being in our bodies can be disrupted either naturally (seizures) or artificially (feeding the brain conflicting sensory inputs).

Dr. Jane Aspell and Phd Student Lukas Heydrich attached 17 participants to electrocardiogram sensors and had them view videos of their bodies through virtual reality goggles so that their body appeared to be two meters in front of them.

The Eternities: Navigating the Out-of-Body Experience with Graham Nicholls

imagesSubjective mental states and the nature of consciousness remains a perennial topic of debate here at Disinfo. Martin at The Eternities podcast has interviewed Graham Nicholls, author of Navigating the Out of Body Experience.

Via The Eternities:

Graham Nicholls claims to have experienced hundreds of out-of-body experiences (OBEs) since his first spontaneous one at twelve years old. Over the years he has sought to hone the art in his efforts to increase the number of his own experiences and their attainability for others. Graham has for several years offered one-on-one coaching and in 2012 published Navigating the Out of Body Experience, detailing his techniques alongside an exploration of the science and philosophy of the area, as well as what to expect from an experience.

In the podcast, Graham discusses the idea of the OBE as taking place within “the extended mind”; his holistic, multi-disciplinary approach; the psychological and energetic benefits; the interviewer’s own experiences with OBEs, influencing his novel, Human+; the three main impediments to having an experience; Graham’s telepathy experiments with Rupert Sheldrake; and veridical evidence for OBEs.

PZ Myers Calls Eben Alexander’s Visions Brain-Damaged ‘Bullshit’

Harvard-educated neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander woke up one morning with a bad case of E. Coli eating his brain. Before he could say “alakazam,” his neocortex had shut down completely, while his incorporeal body was whisked away on butterfly wings into the depths of the Infinite Beyond. He saw visions, was given messages, and upon returning to consciousness, wrote down his story, which he summarized for Newsweek.

Upon reading this account, blogging biologist and professional party-pooper PZ Myers basically accuses Dr. Alexander of being retarded.  Relishing in his contempt for any Swedenborgian realities that may lie beyond atoms and the void, Myers wipes his ass with Newsweek on his famous science blog Pharyngula:

I’ve got to wonder who is responsible for this nonsense, and how it gets past the staff at Newsweek. Every once in a while, they’ve just got to put up a garish cover story touting the reality of Christian doctrine, and invariably, the whole story is garbage.

What Really Happens In An ‘Out Of Body Experience’

oobeSome shocking results are revealed when science tries to explain near-death experiences (NDEs) and other out of body experiences (OBEs), writes Mario Beauregard, author of Brain Wars, at Salon:

…Tales of otherworldly experiences have been part of human cultures seemingly forever, but NDEs as such first came to broad public attention in 1975 by way of American psychiatrist and philosopher Raymond Moody’s popular book Life After Life: The Investigation of a Phenomenon–Survival of Bodily Death. He presented more than 100 case studies of people who experienced vivid mental experiences close to death or during “clinical death” and were subsequently revived to tell the tale. Their experiences were remarkably similar, and Moody coined the term NDE to refer to this phenomenon. The book was popular and controversial, and scientific investigation of NDEs began soon after its publication with the founding, in 1978, of the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS)—the first organization in the world devoted to the scientific study of NDEs and their relationship to mind and consciousness.

Alien Abductions Likely Are Vivid Dreams, Reports Sleep Study

imagesFindings suggest that aliens encounters are a form of vivid dreaming that can be coached. An alternate interpretation would be, it is possible to contact aliens through the dreamworld. Life’s Little Mysteries writes:

Researchers say they have conducted “the first experiment to ever prove that close encounters with UFOs and extraterrestrials are a product of the human mind.”

In a sleep study by the Out-Of-Body Experience Research Center in Los Angeles, 20 volunteers were instructed to perform a series of mental steps upon waking up or becoming lucid during the night that might lead them to have out-of-body experiences culminating in perceived encounters with aliens. More than half experienced at least one full or partial out-of-body experience, and seven of them were able to make contact with UFOs or extraterrestrials during these dream-like experiences.

One participant recalled making a successful attempt to separate from his body: “I [then] tried to find aliens.

Malaysian Guru Offering Tours Of Heaven And Hell

Rejected-by-Hell-againA visit to the afterlife will set you back $61. Via Mind Power News, an account from a reporter who attempted the otherworldly journey:

A group of daring people took the opportunity to be part of a ‘Hell Tour’ in Penang. The trip was organised by Master Kek Eng Seng of the Tze Bei Guan Yin Dhamma Centre, who claims that he can travel through the realms of Earth, Heaven and Hell. For the first time in Malaysia, he offered people the opportunity to visit the ‘Afterworld’.

The number of Hell travelers was brought down to slightly more than 50, including a dozen reporters from the Chinese dailies and yours truly.

As night fell, the group, all clad in white shirts symbolising purity and sincerity, gathered at Padang Brown in Georgetown for the “tour”.

After some prayers and rituals, we were all set to start our journey at around 10.15pm.
