FreedomPop’s Anonymous, Encrypted “Privacy Phone” Service

Forgive me if I’m a little bit cynical at this point about any company claiming to offer anonymous phone service. However, if it’s all on the up and up – and presuming that the NSA and their associated goons can’t render its “privacy” claims null and void – FreedomPop’s phone could be useful. You can pay for your service with BitCoins, too.

Via The Next Web:

Budget carrier FreedomPop today announced a new Privacy Phone service that attempts to offer secure and anonymous voice, text and data communications.

Jokingly referred to as the “Snowden phone,” FreedomPop’s latest offering is based on a Samsung Galaxy S II. Voice and text will run over 128-bit encryption, while data is funneled through a pre-installed VPN. In an extra touch of security, you’ll be able to pay for the phone in bitcoin in order to keep the transaction anonymous. FreedomPop also says you can change your number whenever you want.

US Secretary of State In Recorded Call to US Ambassador to Ukraine: ‘F**k The EU’

Not so fun anymore when someone’s tapping your phone calls, is it?

Via KYIV POST:

In a conversation leaked online and posted to YouTube on Feb. 4, voices closely resembling those of U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland discuss loosely the roles of Ukrainian opposition leaders and the United Nations, and frustration over inaction and indecision by the European Union in solving Ukraine’s political crisis.

The woman, who sounds like Nuland, can be heard on the recording saying “fuck the EU,” while the man, who sounds like  Pyatt, refers to Vitali Klitschko as the “top dog” among opposition leaders but implies that Klitschko is too inexperienced to hold a top government post.

The Kyiv Post cannot verify the authenticity of the conversation. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv had no comment today, but said that Nuland might address the issue during a press conference in Kyiv on Feb.

A Taiwanese tourist almost drowned after she walked off the edge of a pier while playing with her phone. Don’t worry: She didn’t lose the phone.

Via BBC:

Police were alerted to the incident by a witness and rescued her in a speedboat after about 20 minutes.

The woman, who apologised, was taken to hospital for observation but police said she was fine.

Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the water police said officers found her floating metres from the pier.

“She was still out in the water laying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn’t swim,” the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted him as saying.

“She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologised… she said ‘I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I’ve fallen in’.”

Constable Kelly called on people to pay more attention when using social media around water.

New Brain-Control Interface Uses Thoughts To Make Phone Calls

After years of forgetting your friends’ numbers because they were saved on your cellphone, new technology allows you to make calls by simply thinking the phone number. Via MIT Technology Review:

Researchers in California have created a way to place a call on a cell phone using just your thoughts. Their new brain-computer interface is almost 100 percent accurate for most people after only a brief training period.

The system was developed by Tzyy-Ping Jung, a researcher at the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues. Besides acting as an ultraportable aid for severely disabled people, the system might one day have broader uses, he says. For example, it could create the ultimate hands-free experience for cell-phone users, or be used to detect when drivers or air-traffic controllers are getting drowsy by sensing lapses in concentration.

Phone With ‘Human Touch’ Developed In Japan

PhoneIn case video chat wasn’t realistic enough for you. Via Brisbane Times:

Japanese researchers say they have developed a human-shaped mobile phone with a skin-like outer layer that enables users to feel closer to those on the other end.

“The mobile phone may feel like the person you are talking to,” the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) said in a press release, describing the gadget as a “revolutionary telecom medium”.

The project is a collaboration between Osaka University, the mobile telephone operator NTT DoCoMo and other institutes.

They hope to put it into commercial production within five years by adding image and voice recognition functions.

New Mobile Phone App To ‘Spot Pedophiles’

If you’re going to rely on a phone app to keep your children safe, I suppose this is a good one. BBC News reports:

A mobile phone application which claims to identify adults posing as children is to be released.

The team behind Child Defence says the app can analyse language to generate an age profile, identifying potential paedophiles.

Isis Forensics developed the tool after parental concerns over children accessing sites on their mobiles.

But child protection experts warned against such technology lulling people into thinking they are safe.

Child Defence project leader James Walkerdine, based at Lancaster University, said: “This software improves children’s chances of working out that something isn’t right.
