I recently organized a roundtable discussion with a rumor expert, a cognitive deception researcher and skeptical investigators about their never-ending work to expose the truth at Hopes&Fears:

The Experts:

SUSAN GERBIC: Co-founder of Monterey County Skeptics, founder of Skeptic Action, leader of Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia (GSoW), and a regular contributor to Skepticality and Skeptical Inquirer.

BENJAMIN RADFORD: Deputy editor of Skeptical Inquirer science magazine, a Research Fellow with the non-profit Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, has written over a thousand articles on  urban legends, the paranormal and media literacy.

PETER A. HANCOCK, D.SC., PH.D.: Author of Hoax Springs Eternal: The Psychology of Cognitive Deception, a book that defines and explains cognitive deception and explores its prominent potential historical instances.

GARY FINE PH.D.: American sociologist and author, cowrote the book Whispers on the Color Line: Rumor and Race in America,  areas of research involve the contemporary legend, particularly political and economic rumor.

Indiana Congressman Bob Morris Vs. The Girl Scouts

Girl ScoutsReports the AP via the Washington Post :

Undaunted by ridicule from the leader of his own party, an Indiana lawmaker is standing by his allegations that the Girl Scouts is a radical organization that promotes abortions and homosexuality. The scouts and Planned Parenthood have dismissed Rep. Bob Morris’ comments as absurd, as did Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma. But Morris, a Republican, told The Associated Press his critics need to do more research into the 100-year-old scouting organization.

“My family and I took a view and we’re sticking by it,” Morris said Tuesday, adding that his daughters were joining an alternative group for young girls run by conservative Christians. “My girls are no longer Girl Scouts. They’re now going to join American Heritage Girls.” Morris’ comments were the butt of jokes inside the House on Tuesday, with Bosma spending much of the day handing out Thin Mints to lawmakers. He joked that Morris’ comments led him to buy hundreds of cases of the famous Girl Scout cookies …

Stephen Colbert, Inspired by Senator Jon Kyl’s Big Planned Parenthood Lie, Introduces Twitter’s #NotIntendedToBeAFactualStatement

Remember in Friday's "Rewrite" when we showed you the big lie Sen. Jon Kyl told on the Senate floor about Planned Parenthood? The lie that "well over 90%" of Planned Parenthood's services go to abortions? The lie that Sen. Kyl's staff later said "was not intended to be a factual statement" — a remark Lawrence [O'Donnell] called "one of the strangest clarifications in Senate history?" Well, we weren't the only ones who took notice. So did Stephen Colbert.
