Technology And The Concentration Of Power

microchipVia the Webstock Conference lecture Our Comrade The Electron, Maciej Cegłowski on the internet as a force for centralizing, rather than dispersing, power:

Technology concentrates power. In the 90′s, it looked like the Internet might be an exception, that it could be a decentralizing, democratizing force. No one controlled it, no one designed it, it was just kind of assembling itself in an appealing, anarchic way. The companies that first tried to centralize the Internet, like AOL and Microsoft, failed risibly. And open source looked ready to slay any dragon.

But those days are gone. We’ve centralized the bejesus out of the Internet now. There’s one search engine (plus the one no one uses), one social network (plus the one no one uses), one Twitter. We use one ad network, one analytics suite. Anywhere you look online, one or two giant American companies utterly dominate the field.

And there’s the cloud.

Gazing Inside The Deep State That Controls The American Empire

pentagonVia BillMoyers.com, Mike Lofgren describes the branches of the structure that actually rules us:

Yes, there is another government concealed behind the one that is visible at either end of Pennsylvania Avenue, a hybrid entity of public and private institutions ruling the country according to consistent patterns in season and out, connected to, but only intermittently controlled by, the visible state whose leaders we choose.

As a congressional staff member for 28 years specializing in national security and possessing a top secret security clearance, I was at least on the fringes of the world I am describing. Like virtually every employed person, I became, to some extent, assimilated into the culture of the institution I worked for.

The Deep State is a hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department.

Otis Pike, First Congressman to Battle NSA, Dies Unnoticed

Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 12.55.10 PMAt possibly the most poignant time in the last 30 years,  the man who valiantly did battle with the US intelligence octopus in the 1970s, Otis Pike,  has died.  All liberty-minded Americans should be celebrating his character and accomplishments, but there is a pervasive and undeserved lull.   Mark Ames of Pando.com writes:

Pike asked questions never asked or answered since the start of the Cold War: What was America’s intelligence budget? What was the purpose of the CIA, NSA and other intelligence agencies and programs? Were they succeeding by their own standards? Were taxpayers getting their money’s worth? Were they making America safer?…The problem was that Pike asked the right questions—and that led him to some very wrong answers, as far as the powers that be were concerned.

…Today, there’s an underlying assumption that exposing dark government secrets is somehow transformative in itself, even without a wider politics to frame it.

Nuclear Fusion Milestone Passed At US Lab

imagesIs nuclear fusion the answer to our energy problem or the beginning of a new one?

Via BBC:

Researchers at a US lab have passed a crucial milestone on the way to their ultimate goal of achieving self-sustaining nuclear fusion.

Harnessing fusion – the process that powers the Sun – could provide an unlimited and cheap source of energy.

But to be viable, fusion power plants would have to produce more energy than they consume, which has proven elusive.

Now, a breakthrough by scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) could boost hopes of scaling up fusion.

NIF, based at Livermore in California, uses 192 beams from the world’s most powerful laser to heat and compress a small pellet of hydrogen fuel to the point where nuclear fusion reactions take place.

The BBC understands that during an experiment in late September, the amount of energy released through the fusion reaction exceeded the amount of energy being absorbed by the fuel – the first time this had been achieved at any fusion facility in the world.

Take Back Your Power!

Homeowners, experts, doctors, local governments, environmentalists and health organizations around the world are saying NO to “smart” meters, which are quietly being installed on every home and business worldwide – without disclosure of the risks and the violations of rights.
"The smart grid is increasingly understood as an over engineered, ill-advised, financial boondoggle at taxpayer expense, capable of endangering the security of the entire national grid, violating constitutional privacy protections and endangering public health. In addition, the smart grid/metering has not been found to save energy when all the new variables in the system are factored in. Plus, time-of-use pricing is largely punitive to those who can least afford it. Time-of-use pricing is fundamentally a Wall Street model designed to maintain shareholder profits as we transition to more energy efficient models that will reduce demand." – Berkshire-Litchfield Environmental Council

Adam Kokesh Arrested Again for “Illegal Use of A Microphone”….

On the Eighteenth of May 2013 Adam Kokesh was giving a speech at “Smoke Down Prohibition V”, which was an event where marijuana users gather across from Independence Hall  in Philadelphia, PA to consume marijuana in an act of civil disobedience. This is the fifth such event  and at all of the four prior smoke downs individuals gathered peacefully, consumed large quantities of marijuana, and were not disturbed by the police. This event would be much different, as the police chose to escalate the situation by violently assaulting multiple individuals and even resulting to kidnapping two of the event’s speakers. Adam Kokesh was giving the final speech to the crowd and before you could properly finish a Parks Police and Fish and Wildlife officer grabbed Adam (who had yet to engage in cannabis reflection that day) and took him while with the microphone still in his hand. Adam was taken away to a local Philadelphia jail and then was moved to Federal Detention Center Philadelphia where he would spend right under a week locked in a cage for not committing a crime.… Read the rest

Power

In February 1957, a small band of Shuar (Jívaro) men and I became lost after trekking for weeks through mountainous Upper Amazon rainforest. Tired, disoriented, and hungry, we finally ran into a friendly group of Shuar hunters who told us that we had been going in exactly the wrong direction. They shared a bit of their provisions and pointed the way toward the Shuar neighborhood we sought.

Leaving the hunters, we soon came to a small but raging river, fed by recent rainstorms in the Andes to the west. This was an obstacle to our further progress, so we waited for several days for the waters to go down, without luck. My companions waited quietly and seemed unperturbed by the situation while I became increasingly impatient, for I knew it was possible to construct rafts of balsa logs and to get across using makeshift guadua bamboo paddles.… Read the rest

The War on Kids (Trailer)

Via The War On Kids:
The War on Kids is a documentary on Public Education in America. While several documentaries on schools have come out since The War on Kids, these films tend to be either propaganda for charter schools or look at symptoms without any appreciation or understanding of underlying issues. To be a great documentary, it is essential to do the necessary work and dig deeper to uncover the heart of the problems observed. The numerous failures and pathologies associated with school are predominantly due to it autocratic structure. Because no one wants to voluntarily relinquish power, this fundamental problem is never addressed or even recognized.

Bilderberg Power Brokers To Meet in Virginia This Week (In Another U.S. Election Year)

Chantilly, VAIs history repeating itself? “Although most Bilderberg annual meetings are held in Europe—France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Denmark, England, Scotland, Norway—this US election year they’re again gathering at the Westfield Marriott Hotel in Virginia from May 30 to June 3.  Either they’re very fond of that place … or of US elections… or both…!” Via RT:

Every time a “Bilderberg Meeting” takes place, important things happen. The last time they met in the US was an election year, 2008—and the world got Obama. This year they’re back in the US: will they decide who the next president of the United State

When in 2008 they gathered from June 5 to 8 in Chantilly, Virginia—just a stone’s throw from the Washington, DC—Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were neck-in-neck in the battle for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidacy.

On June 5 of that year, Barack and Hillary mysteriously “disappeared” for some hours “somewhere in the DC area.” Their agendas blocked out, they clearly sneaked off to “Meet the Bilderbergers.”

The media kept mum about that, save for an Associated Press report on the campaign trail saying that, “reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair (i.e.
