I have a confession to make. Before I started writing for Disinfo about a year and a half ago, I wasn’t really familiar with James Randi. I’d heard his name come up a few times on the internet in comments threads regarding fringe spirituality, but that was about it. Much like Carl Sagan’s utterly retarded book The Demon Haunted World (which I make fun of here), I wasn’t super familiar with his M.O., but the more I delved into this stuff, the more I realized I was always going to have to deal with superstitious idiots referencing his “work”. So finally, a couple of weeks ago I decided to spend a minor amount of time on the interwebs actually digging into who this loser is and how he convinced a bunch of seemingly at least semi-intelligent people to passionately raise their pitchforks at anyone insinuating the legitimacy of psi.… Read the rest

Although my current employment situation is unfortunately going to prevent me from attending, it should be noted that this weekend marks the advent of the 7th annual Austin Psychedelic Music Festival. Mad props are in order to Austin’s very own The Black Angels for continuing to cohesively bridge the gap between various factions of the stoned music community. For the vast majority of my life, organized psychedelic culture has basically consisted of the hippie jam band crowd and the psi-trance Burning Man set. Of course, the vast majority of entheogen voyagers (myself included) don’t conveniently fit into either one of those camps at all. As a teenage head, psych music to me meant things like Sonic Youth, Kyuss, Monster Magnet, classic Verve albums, and the Future Sound of London rather than hippie-dippy crap like the Grateful Dead and Phish, neither of whom come across as particularly psych-ed out to my ears.… Read the rest
Watching the ongoing retardo dialogue between materialist science and religion continues to amuse me to no end as an Occultist. I mean, both camps should be giving each other high fucking fives. You both hate altered states of consciousness. You are each other’s greatest allies in stunting logical inquiry into the topic. Before any of us can remember, the church got inside science’s head and told them not to tread on their turf by studying experiential inner phenomenon like near death experiences and psychedelic drugs. Science folded like a bitch and has now completely sold itself on its own nonsensical spiritual ignorance.
In the other corner, there’s the most belittled fringe minority in the universe going, errr, why’d we reject all that shamanism stuff? I took mushrooms and stared into a transcendent cognitive eternity. I did it a bunch of times. Isn’t that the sort of thing shamanism was based on? Maybe those folks who didn’t give a shit about killing the planet were onto something after all.… Read the rest
At some point we’re going to have to acknowledge that scientific reductionism as we practice it is no longer an adequate means of explaining reality. In fact, it’s actually sort of becoming a threat to the entire psychic eco system. There’s nowhere to turn but in my friends, but I don’t see a whole fuck of a lot of that sentiment going mainstream anytime soon. People love to shop for useless crap, but when do we start addressing issues of quality over quantity in regards to human consciousness? Where did this expansionary agenda of rampant breeding stem from in the first place? Why exactly did we feel the need to procreate out of control so rapidly? The answer lies in materialist philosophy, quite possibly implanted into our collective brainstems from afar like a catalyst. If you only believe in outwardly repeatable phenomenon, you’re probably ignoring the vast majority of your inner life.… Read the rest
Back in 2010, I took a winter solstice themed acid trip with my lovely wife, which spawned the impetus for me finally writing my second book (which should be coming out this summer). I realized I needed to start writing said book during the trip because it was the one part of my magickal practice I had been neglecting, my magickal journal. According to some Occultists, this is the most important variable in the equation, so yeah, a pretty big oversight on my part and not something that was occurring to me at all before then. So I woke up the next day, sketched out the outline and got moving. Two and a half years later and it’s finally almost done (it only took me a year to write, finding a decent editor and getting that wrapped up has now taken me far longer, unreal). Not surprising though, every time I take psychedelic drugs other than weed, there’s an absolute deluge of otherworldly information that usually takes me quite some time to properly process and mold into action, which is a big part of the reason I don’t do them very often and increasingly focus the intent of the ritual when I do (highly recommended).… Read the rest
One of the strangest things about watching lefty hippie types getting all fired up about wealth inequality is that I never see them even acknowledge how much worse everything is in the arts, which a lot of them are directly involved with. Don’t want to bite the hand that feeds (or pretends like it might feed you one day). Let’s face it, you’re not a real artist until rich people say you are and sadly, it’s probably better now than it used to be say, fifty years ago. Doesn’t matter what art form you’re involved with, it’s all fairly impossible to make ends meet unless you’re either born or fuck your way into the privilege factory. Having a trust fund helps. And that’s the sad thing no one’s saying about this stuff, the worse income disparity gets in society as a whole, the even more psychotically worse it gets in the arts.… Read the rest
