Writing about demonic possession is a thankless task

reddit-alien_5722This week I have added /r/Shinto and /r/Buddhism to the list of subreddits I follow, including /r/Christianity which I am currently banned from on Reddit for talking about psychosis as a rite of passage in mystical experiences related to sorcery. The moderators of the Christian sub claimed that the books I referenced, which were found in University as a student, are not academic. Seemingly because they don’t line up with their views.

Some of the books I had referenced, besides the one by T. M. Luhrmann cited below, were Gothic Ireland: Horror And The Irish Anglican Imagination In The Long Eighteenth Century by Jarlath Killeen. Killeen talks about gothic horror and the liminal as an Anglican identity, transubstantiation as a form of cannibalism, and erotic necrophilia. The Darkened Room: Women, Power and Spiritualism In Late Victorian England by Alex Owen documents the epidemic of hysteria caused by interests in mediumship and psychosis understood as a rite of passage.… Read the rest

Whoaverse, Reddit, And The Perils of Default Subscriptions

via chycho

whoaverse-mascot

If you, like me, share and acquire news and information and entertain and are entertained by browsing forums and user-generated news and information aggregate sites, then you should be aware, there is a new player in town and it shows a lot of promise.

whoaverse.com is in its early alpha stage right now but the buzz its creating is intoxicating. I haven’t felt this much excitement about sharing information online for quite some time.

The admins of the site appear to be dedicated to transparency and at present are very receptive to suggestions on how the site should be managed. Have your say, I have already had mine. Here is my take regarding default subs:

1) “Personally, I don’t think there should be any defaults if at all possible. I think once people join they should see the top subs and be able to click on the ones that they want to join, like a list.”

2) “I think there should be no defaults, but a list from which people can choose what they want as their defaults.

No Thanks, Reddit: No ‘RedPill’ For Me

Andrew Gonsalves writes at Don’t Feed the Animals:

I recently stumbled across a subreddit called “TheRedPill” and I am a little saddened by it. I’ve long been aware of pick-up artist logic, anti-feminism, and general alpha-male mentality, so this community’s existence is not surprising. What’s so sad about it is that it represents a portion of the population whose first reaction to the illusion of being marginalized is to push back in the opposite direction. They call this adaptation, but what they’re really doing is painting themselves in with every other movement that fought social change to the bitter end.

To summarize The Red Pill, it’s basically a bunch of men huddling together and complaining about how women are by nature incompetent and should not be trusted with any responsibility or authority. This also means that they view women, not as individuals, but as naive, manipulable creatures who inconveniently just happen to be holding the one thing they need them for – sex – at arm’s length.

After being transported to Auschwitz, Eva Mozes Kor and her twin sister Miriam were subjected to gruesome medical experiments under the infamous Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele – “The Angel of Death”. Eva and Miriam lived long enough to be liberated by Soviet soldiers, but the rest of their family wasn’t so lucky: They were all killed at the camp. Eva recently took to Reddit to answer some questions about her experience as part of their “Ask Me Anything” Q & A series. If you want to know more, you can check out the documentary Forgiving Dr. Mengele, available here.

Via Reddit:

When I was 10 years old, my family and I were taken to Auschwitz. My twin sister Miriam and I were separated from my mother, father, and two older sisters. We never saw any of them again. We became part of a group of twin children used in medical and genetic experiments under the direction of Nazi doctor Josef Mengele.

Via Reddit: ‘Why American Ex-Pats Go Crazy in Central America’

410W02MDYELOver at Reddit, Former American ex-pat NoblePeasant5 provides a little perspective on why some Americans seem to go a little nuts living in Central America. It’s worth a read:

Via Reddit:

I call it the Hemmingway experience. It’s no coincidence that so many expats are writers. There is the feeling that you’re doing and experiencing so much more than your peers and that you have to translate all of your deep insights into ink. You start a blog filled with scatching social commentaries and instagram filtered photos of waterfalls and flowers. You’ll always want to remember them.

You’re also now experiencing life as a D-list celebrity. You’re the center of attention where ever you go. Want to buy a burger in McDonalds? The entire place is staring at you and listening to your accent to try to tell where you are from. Want to get into a very popular club?

Reddit Under DDOS Attack

reddit ddosPopular social news aggregation site is currently under what it is describing as a “malicious DDOS attack”. Reddit has been in the news quite a bit over the last few days due to a few community members  who have been analyzing photos and videos of the Boston Marathon bombing in an attempt to identify suspects. There’s no indication that the DDOS and the internet sleuthing are related, and at present, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
