Virgin Volcanic: Richard Branson To Journey to the Center of the Earth

Virgin VolcanicGreg Rose writes on Virgin:

Richard Branson launches journeys to the centre of the Earth through Virgin Volcanic. Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks to join first expedition.

Only 500 people have been to space, only three people have been to the bottom of the ocean, but no one has ever attempted to journey to the core of an active volcano. Until now.

Using patented carbon-carbon materials pioneered for deep space exploration, Virgin is proud to announce a revolutionary new vehicle, VVS1, which will be capable of plunging three people into the molten lava core of an active volcano.

In its first three years of operation, Virgin Volcanic‘s VVS1 will target the five most active volcanoes in the world.

Sir Richard Branson will go on the first expedition along with Tom Hanks, Academy Award winning actor and star of Joe Versus the Volcano; Black Eyed Peas recording artist and science enthusiast Will.i.am; actor/producer Seth Green; and two-time Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple … : )

Richard Branson: It’s Time To End The War On Drugs

The billionaire businessman shows a hint of his counterculture roots by joining the call for an end to the war on (some) drugs, on his Virgin blog:

Visited Portugal, as one of the Global Drug Commissioners, to congratulate them on the success of their drug policies over the last 10 years.

Ten years ago the Portuguese Government responded to widespread public concern over drugs by rejecting a “war on drugs” approach and instead decriminalized drug possession and use. It further rebuffed convention by placing the responsibility for decreasing drug demand as well as managing dependency under the Ministry of Health rather than the Ministry of Justice. With this, the official response towards drug-dependent persons shifted from viewing them as criminals to treating them as patients.

Now with a decade of experience Portugal provides a valuable case study of how decriminalization coupled with evidence-based strategies can reduce drug consumption, dependence, recidivism and HIV infection and create safer communities for all.

Richard Branson Predicts Peak Oil In 2015

As the owner of a major airline, Virgin's Richard Branson must think about the prospect of peak oil more than most of us. Apparently he's a believer, as reported in the Christian Science Monitor:
Long-accustomed to being dismissed as alarmists, the arguments of those warning of an impending peak oil crisis are now being bolstered by support from multi-billionaires like Richard Branson. A major report funded by the Virgin Airlines owner and other British business leaders warned this week that the world is running out of oil and predicts shortages and price spikes as soon as 2015. A future of painful hikes in the cost of food, heating, and travel in a world unprepared for surging oil prices was forecast by the Industry Taskforce for Peak Oil and Energy Security. "Don't let the oil crunch catch us out in the way that the credit crunch did,” wrote Mr. Branson and other business executives in a forward to the report...

Virgin’s Branson Launches Underwater Plane

From CNN Money:
Virgin unveiled the latest addition to Richard Branson's luxury fleet on Friday: an underwater plane that will fly riders into the depths of the Caribbean Sea. Guests on Necker Island, a retreat in the British Virgin Islands, will be able to dive underwater in a submarine dubbed the Necker Nymph for $25,000 a week. But that's only after shelling out around $300,000 for a one-week stay on Necker, the private island owned by billionaire and Virgin Group chairman Richard Branson. Beginning on Feb. 20, two riders and a pilot will be able to take the plunge from land, or from a boat. The underwater plane uses the downward pressure on its wings to fly through the water for up to two hours at a time, while an open cockpit will give riders a 360-degree view...

Why Aren’t You Building Your Own UFO Yet?

Charlie Jane Anders writes on io9.com:
Do you know why Richard Branson was in such a hurry to unveil SpaceShipTwo last week? It's not because he loves cool toys — it's because he was worried an inventor who's created a personal UFO would steal his thunder.
Or at least, that's what a new press release from UFO guru Luke Fortune claims. Fortune, an inventor, has put the plans and patents to allow you to build your own laser-fusion-powered UFO online for free. The prototype will cost $60,000 for you to build, but don't worry — soon, building your own UFO will be dirt cheap, and everybody on the planet will be flying them, according to Fortune's press release. And this will transform the world's economy.

Virgin Galactic Space Program Launched In Mojave Desert

Sarah Gordon for the Daily Mail:

Sir Richard Branson’s first commercial spacecraft is finally being unveiled today after five years of top secret construction.

Potential space tourists will have the chance to lay eyes on the long-awaited SpaceShipTwo created by Virgin Galactic, Branson’s own space programme. Paid-up passengers and VIPs have been promised a ‘theatrical unveiling’ in the Mojave Desert in California and a cocktail party to celebrate the groundbreaking event.

Peter Cheney, a 63-year-old future passenger who was among the first enthusiasts to sign up for a Virgin Galactic experience said: “We’ve all been patiently waiting to see exactly what the vehicle is going to look like. It would be nice to see it in the flesh.”

Created by Burt Rutan, a famed aviation designer, the craft is based on his prototype SpaceShipOne which won a $10million prize in 2004 for being the frist privately-manned craft to reach space…
