Decoding the Symbols on the Satanic Temple’s Baphomet Statue

You all know about the unveiling of the Satanic Temple’s statue of Baphomet in Detroit last weekend, but do you know what the symbols mean? BBC News investigates:

A controversial statue unveiled by the Satanic Temple at a secret ceremony in Detroit has attracted protests. But who is the goat-headed figure? And what do the elements of the statue symbolise?

baphomet

The bronze statue is nearly 9ft tall and depicts a winged hermaphrodite known as Baphomet, flanked by two smiling children. It cost $100,000 (£64,000) to make and hundreds of Satanists turned out to see it unveiled.

Long term, the Satanic Temple wants to move the piece 900 miles (1,450km) south-west and erect it opposite a Ten Commandments monument outside Oklahoma City’s Capitol Building.

The Baphomet will “complement and contrast” the Christian commandments which include “unconstitutional prohibitions against free speech and free exercise of religion,” according to the organisation.

“Our statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures,” says Lucien Greaves, the group’s co-founder.

Baphomet Statue Unveiled At ‘Largest Public Satanic Ceremony In History’

The Satanic Temple has unveiled a new statue of Baphomet in Detroit in what’s been billed as the largest public satanic ceremony in history. Reuters via Yahoo News has the details:

A Satanic organization unveiled a controversial bronze Baphomet sculpture in Detroit just before midnight on Saturday, after trying in vain to have it installed near a 10 Commandments monument in Oklahoma.

Due to planned demonstrations, the group, which is opposed to Bible-themed displays on government land, kept the location of the unveiling of its 9-foot-tall monument secret until the last moment, when it emailed the information to ticket holders.

The Satanic Temple unveiled the one-ton statue at an industrial building near the Detroit River just before 11:30 p.m. local time as supporters cheered, “Hail Satan.” Some of the hundreds in attendance rushed to pose for photos.

The statue of a winged Baphomet with a human body and a goat’s head resembled a design the group previously released.

Can the Satanic Temple Save America?

SatanWantsYou.jpg

Yes, we know the Satanic Temple and the Church of Satan are not the same. Great poster though…

Some satanic click-bait from Daily Beast, which claims “America’s new Satanists are less about animal sacrifice and more into ‘Paradise Lost’—and they may be our best hope for saving religious freedoms”:

It’s 1 a.m., and I’m waiting for a Satanic ritual to start at a loft in Detroit. It’s dark, natch, and smoky, ditto, crammed with people dressed in black. Most of them are young and goth-ish. There are upside-down crosses aplenty, pounding dance music, a porn room and a surprisingly good hors d’oeuvres table—freshly baked Madeleines and gorgeous fruit, on platters grouped around a massive ice-sculpture replica of Brancusi’s Princess X, a statue that’s either a penis and testicles or a woman gazing into a mirror, depending on your point of view.

At this Satanic Temple party, the ritual is finally starting.

Harvard University to Hold Satanic Black Mass on Monday

Ninth-Gate-Satan-RitualHarvard University, one of the most well-respected Ivy League schools in the world, has responded to rumors that they would be hosting a Black Mass performed by the Satanic Temple on Monday. As it turns out, they weren’t rumors at all.

The idea that Ivy League students have sinister pacts with the devil is usually the stuff of b-movies, but on Monday, the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club will play host to a Black Mass, a ritual meant to invoke Satan while desecrating the Catholic sacrament, usually through stabbing, crushing, or sexually defiling a communion wafer.

As you can imagine, religious groups are completely freaking out about it, even prompting the Archdiocese of Boston to issue a statement asking Harvard to shut down the event. Still, Harvard says that while they might not personally agree with the views expressed by student clubs, they “support the rights of our students and faculty to speak and assemble freely”.… Read the rest

New York’s Satanic Temple Launches Campaign Promoting Freedom Of Prayer To Satan In School

schoolCould offerings to the devil in the classroom help close the test score gap between the United States and other developed nations? From the Satanic Temple’s press release:

The Satanic Temple, a religious organization based in New York City, has declared May 15th as “Protect Children Day” with the mission of putting an end to corporal punishment and the use of isolation rooms in schools for Temple followers as well as for others who share their beliefs.

In addition to making a letter available to students, The Satanic Temple is also providing fact sheets on corporal punishment and solitary confinement, a Satanic-themed activity book, and FAQs so that students can understand their religious rights in school. “We want children to know that they are permitted to pray to Satan in school and that they can even share their religious beliefs with others in accordance with certain guidelines,” Greaves said.

Satanists Fight For Display In Florida State Capitol Alongside Nativity Scene And Festivus Pole

nativityI am normally against displays of religion on public property, but I would be curious to see this come to fruition. The Florida Times-Union reports:

The state Department of Management Services on Wednesday denied an attempt by “Satanists” to put up a display in the Florida Capitol, which currently showcases the Florida Prayer Network’s Christian Nativity scene, a Festivus pole made of beer cans, posters from atheists, and a crudely-made Flying Spaghetti Monster.

“The department’s position is that your proposed display is grossly offensive during the holiday season,” DMS Administrative Assistant Sherrie K. Routt emailed a group calling itself the Satanic Temple. The proposed display that bannered the phrase “Happy holidays from the Satanic Temple” atop a diorama of an angel falling into hell.

Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the temple, said in an email the group was “surprised and dismayed” by the rejection. However, before possibly challenging the decision, the temple is seeking clarification from DMS.

Satanic Temple Monument To Accompany Oklahoma Ten Commandments

satanic logoIt should be fun to watch Oklahoman lawmakers try to squirm out of allowing this Satanic Temple edifice (featuring interactive kids’ display!) to be erected next to the existing Ten Commandments monument outside the Oklahoma state Capitol. From ABC News:

A monument to the Ten Commandments that sits outside the Oklahoma statehouse may soon have some unholy company.

Satan worshipers are seeking to build their own monument at the state Capitol, and Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the Satanic Temple, said he’s “optimistic” it will be approved.

“I really don’t see a grounds which they can reject this,” he told ABC News.

The privately funded Ten Commandments monument was approved by the conservative-led Oklahoma state legislature in 2009, and erected on Capitol grounds in 2012. It has riled up opponents ever since, many calling into question the constitutionality of the monument.

But Greaves does not see a problem with the Christian monument, as long as it does not stand alone.
