America’s Newest War (on Sex Trafficking)

America is always at war, one way or another, isn’t it. Politico suggests that “As the war on drugs loses its luster, legislators are intent to make the same mistakes with sex workers”:

No one supports sex slavery. And the thought of child sex slavery turns the stomach. Last Friday, President Obama ostensibly addressed this issue by signing the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act (JVTA), a massive package of grant appropriations, criminal penalty enhancements and other items aimed at fighting human trafficking in America and abroad. As well-meaning as this legislation may be, the “War on Sex Trafficking” that the federal government is waging will fail, just as the “War on Drugs” has failed.

With almost unanimous, bipartisan support in Congress and fans ranging from evangelical Christians to Planned Parenthood, it’s easy to see the JVTA as a rare win-win in Washington.

Self-styled abolitionist Ryan Dalton’s new tech startup, Rescue Forensics, wants to change the way the police fight human trafficking sex work by dredging up that old spectre The Satanic Panic under a new guise: Human Trafficking Hysteria.

The reality is that Rescue Forensics preys on sex workers — by selling their online activity to Law Enforcement Agencies.

A Vice’s Melissa Gira Grant reports:

Big data” and “sex trafficking.” That it took so long for someone to combine these buzz terms into one money-making venture is just one of several mysteries surrounding Rescue Forensics, a new startup.

The “big” in the Memphis-based company? Rescue Forensics claims it “archives massive quantities of data from classified advertisement sites specializing in commercial sex ads.” It gathers a lot of text, and even more nude and semi-nude photos. Then it turns all that over to the cops.

Switzerland Starts Sex Drive-In

Waiting for customersHard to imagine that stuffy Switzerland, land of conservative bankers, would launch such a progressive project as a sex drive-in, but it’s an effort to ghettoize prostitution reports Reuters:

Greeted by a press pack rather than prostitutes, the first customer to roll up to Switzerland’s sex drive-in on opening night took one lap of the facility before making a hasty exit.

The second car, a family vehicle driven by a man in sunglasses under cloudy evening skies, broke down and needed jump starting in front of a host of photographers, sniggering into their cameras.

Zurich authorities had said they expected a modest start to the country’s first so-called “sex boxes”, a row of drive-in wooden garages on a looping track where clients in cars can visit prostitutes, shielded from prying eyes and security cameras.

With an estimated annual turnover of around 3.5 billion Swiss francs ($3.79 billion), prostitution has been legal in Switzerland since 1942, with sex workers in Zurich required to have a special permit, health insurance and pay tax…

Caught on Film: The Dark World of Truck Stop Sex Workers

The_Lot_Lizard_by_Kelii

Lot Lizard is a new documentary by Filmmaker Alexander Perlman about intricate life of truck stop prostitutes, and the odd lonely life of truckers.

via Mother Jones

“The truth is, making the movie was a really traumatic experience. I suspect I may have developed some mild PTSD.” This is how filmmaker Alexander Perlman describes shooting Lot Lizard, his hypnotic new documentary about truck stop prostitution. While his claim might sound hyperbolic—or like a canny bit of marketing—it rings true: He logged thousands of miles and hundreds of hours to make the film, braving roach motels, crack highs, and homicidal pimps. Indeed, what Perlman captures in Lot Lizard is visceral and harrowing.

The film’s three protagonists—Betty, Monica, and Jennifer—work on the fringes of the trucking industry. America’s Independent Truckers’ Association estimates there are nearly 5,000 truck stops across the country, and although many offer nondescript places to sleep, eat, or shower, many others host a bustling shadow economy of sex and drugs.

The Sexual World Of Bankers

Untitled-4Strauss-Kahn And The Secret Culture Of Aggressive Sexuality In The High Pressure World Of Bankers And Banksters.

My colleague Mike Whitney asks:

“So, what are the chances that Strauss-Kahn will get a fair trial now that he’s been blasted as a serial sex offender in about 3,000 articles and in all the televised news reports?

Do you remember any Wall Street bankers being dragged off in handcuffs when they blew up the financial system and bilked people out of trillions of dollars?”

The answer to both questions is certainly Non, in French or No in English, but there’s more to the connection between Sex and Wall Street. Without commenting on the evidence in this case—which has been asserted, not proven– there is a deeper context that is being ignored.

I call it the “Testosterone Factor” in The Crime of Our Time, my book about how Wall Street criminally engineered the financial crisis.… Read the rest
