Ancient Egyptian Sphinx Mysteriously Unearthed In Israel

Things not where they are supposed to be? Historical strangeness via CNN:

A recent discovery of part of a 4,000-year-old Egyptian sphinx has been a most unexpected find in Tel Hazor in northern Israel.

Inexplicably buried far from Egypt, the paws of a sphinx statue, resting on its base, have been unearthed with an inscription in hieroglyphs naming King Mycerinus. The pharaoh ruled in 2500 BC and oversaw the construction of one of the three Giza pyramids.

“This is the only sphinx of this king known in the world – even in Egypt. It is also the only monumental piece of Egyptian sculpture found anywhere in the Levant,” said professor Amnon Ben-Tor, the director of the excavation, referring to the region spanning the east of the Mediterranean Sea.

Tel Hazor was the capital of the city of Canaan 4,000 years ago. The question of how the sphinx got to Tel Hazor will likely remain a mystery.

Egypt Considering Making Pyramids And Sphinx Available For Rent

Book for your next birthday now. Al Arabiya reports:

Egypt’s finance ministry sent a proposal to the country’s antiquities ministry to consider offering key monuments, including the pyramids, to international tourism firm as a quick solution to generate funds needed to overcome the financial crisis, an official has said.

Rumors about the proposal, which some described as preposterous, have circulated online for weeks. But on Wednesday, Adel Abdel Sattar, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, in an interview with Egypt’s ONTV channel confirmed the existence of a proposal to offer Egypt’s monuments, including the pyramids in Giza, the Sphinx, the Abu Simbel Temple and the temples of Luxor.

Sattar said the proposal indicated that such a move would provide a quick solution to the country’s financial deficit as it will generate about $200 billion over five years.

Egyptian Extremist Cleric Calls For Destruction Of Pyramids And Sphinx

If radical Islamists sustain power in post-revolution Egypt, could the pyramids be imperiled? Via CNN:

Morgan Al-Gohary, a jihadi sheikh with a history of radicalism, appeared on the private Egyptian TV channel Dream TV 2 Saturday evening and declared that if he and his ilk ever came to power, they would not hesitate to destroy the “pagan statues” the Sphinx and the pyramids.

He’s no stranger to the notion of vandalizing ancient artifacts, boasting to the show’s host, Wael Al-Abrashi, that while in Afghanistan, he took part along with the Taliban in the demolition of the Bamyan Buddhas in March 2001.

Egyptians have heard this all before — that the pyramids and the Sphinx are pagan monuments and idols, and must therefore must be destroyed. There was a widespread rumor last year that a Salafi (ultraconservative Muslim) leader was advocating covering the monuments in wax but that proved to be spurious.

Vandals Desecrate Masonic Monument with Pink Paint

The Daily Grail reports that:

The House of the Temple, a Masonic landmark in Washington D.C. that featured in a recent Dan Brown novel, was vandalized over the weekend, with pink paint thrown over one of the sphinxes that ‘guard’ the front entrance of the building. Photographer Luis Gomez took the shot and posted it on his “One Photograph a Day” blog on Monday.

The big question about this is why PINK paint? Was it an activist statement suggesting that Freemasons are anti-gay? Or perhaps, the vandal was suggesting Freemasons are “pinkos” (as in communist sympathizers)?

Or perhaps, in true Dan Brown fashion, a disgruntled, gay, anti-communist, Freemason (who also happened to be a student of classical literature), knew that the Latin word for pink is “roseus” …. and therefore used pink paint as a cryptic signal that Freemasons are actually Rosecrucians.… Read the rest
