The Secret US Banking Operations That Fund Suicide Bombers

r_suicide_bomber1Good to see rising tech website Pando Daily veering into more general news following its acquisition of Paul Carr’s NSFW Corp. Here Adam Penenberg looks at a New York lawyer’s 10-year battle against the “cash for suicide bombing” industry:

The day before he blew himself up, Bassam Jamal Darwish al-Takruri wore a freshly ironed white shirt, blazer, and shiny shoes, as if he were on his way to a job interview. As he was about to leave home for the last time, his father gave him 10 shekels in pocket money, apparently unaware of his son’s plans.

Takruri, who lived in Hebron, was 18, boyish, thin, and studious – he dreamed of becoming an engineer — with doleful eyes, scratchy eyebrows, and a high, arcing forehead. He traveled to a secret location to record a video announcing his intent to become a “martyr” and offering glory to Allah. “My dear father, my affectionate mother, my dear brothers and sisters, do not say we lost that who is gone,” he said.

U.S. Soldiers Pose With Bodies Of Suicide Bombers In Afghanistan

AirborneDavid Zucchino writes in the Los Angeles Times:

The paratroopers had their assignment: Check out reports that Afghan police had recovered the mangled remains of an insurgent suicide bomber. Try to get iris scans and fingerprints for identification.

The 82nd Airborne Division soldiers arrived at the police station in Afghanistan’s Zabol province in February 2010. They inspected the body parts. Then the mission turned macabre: The paratroopers posed for photos next to Afghan police, grinning while some held — and others squatted beside — the corpse’s severed legs.

A few months later, the same platoon was dispatched to investigate the remains of three insurgents who Afghan police said had accidentally blown themselves up. After obtaining a few fingerprints, they posed next to the remains, again grinning and mugging for photographs.

Spam Kills: A Text Message Blows Up Russian Suicide Bomber By Accident

SpamWow, can’t believe I didn’t read this story before. From Andrew Osborn in the Telegraph:

The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow’s Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt on a busy square near Red Square on New Year’s Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds.

Security sources believe a spam message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her but nobody else.

She was at her Moscow safe house at the time getting ready with two accomplices, both of whom survived and were seen fleeing the scene.

Islamist terrorists in Russia often use cheap unused mobile phones as detonators. The bomber’s handler, who is usually watching their charge, sends the bomber a text message in order to set off his or her explosive belt at the moment when it is thought they can inflict maximum casualties.

Suppose Suicide Bombers Are Motivated By Suicide, Not Religion?

r_suicide_bomber1What makes a person willing to give their life in the name of holy war? A Boston Globe piece offers a novel theory on the inspirations of suicide bombers: rather than being the most rabid of true-believer fanatics, many may be individuals who are severely depressed and eager to kill themselves, and see “martyrdom” as not technically being suicide:

Williams is among a small cadre of scholars from across the world pushing the rather contentious idea that some suicide bombers may in fact be suicidal. At the forefront is the University of Alabama’s Adam Lankford, who recently published an analysis of suicide terrorism in the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior. Lankford cites Israeli scholars who interviewed would-be Palestinian suicide bombers. These scholars found that 40 percent of the terrorists showed suicidal tendencies; 13 percent had made previous suicide attempts, unrelated to terrorism. Lankford finds Palestinian and Chechen terrorists who are financially insolvent, recently divorced, or in debilitating health in the months prior to their attacks.

Robert Baer Says WikiLeaks Is ‘A Catastrophe’

Car Bomb

The Deadbolt‘s Reg Seeton interviews Bob Baer, immortalized on the silver screen by George Clooney in Syriana, about his new film Car Bomb, but equally interesting are Baer’s comments on WikiLeaks:

BAER: WikiLeaks, I think it’s a catastrophe. I mean, here our most sensitive diplomatic sources are all being exposed and it’s the trustworthiness and creditability of the United States – I mean, in terms of what it’s done to our national security is much worse than any car bomb that could possibly go off.

THE DEADBOLT: As a former spy yourself, how would you deal with your cover being blown in a leak like that?

BAER: You tighten up security. There are certain communications that are protected. The New York Times doesn’t put its sources out on the net, so why should the government? I mean, I believe in openness, too, but not in all cases.

Joe Stack Plane Crash: Why Did He Hate the IRS Enough to Kill?

Austin Plane CrashWe certainly received, and continue to receive, a range of opinion on the final act of Andrew Joseph Stack III.  Since that day, many news outlets have attributed a 1986 tax law change as the source of his anger expressed in the Stack “manifesto” many of you have been commenting on.

As it currently stands, 1 person was killed and 12 injured by his actions in Austin that day.

Carlin DeGuerin Miller writes on CBS News:

Joseph Andrew Stack’s seething hatred for the IRS appeared to have roots at least two decades long, judging from the web post he left behind before crashing his plane into in an Austin, Texas office building Thursday where some 200 employees of the tax agency worked.

The anti “tax man” fuse may have been lit in Stack in 1986, when the software engineer confronted a change in tax law, that required companies using high-tech contractors to withhold part of their salaries for income tax purposes.

The Manifesto Of Austin, Texas Crash Pilot Andrew Joseph Stack III

UPDATE: When I initially posted this story, the pilot’s name was reported as “Joseph Andrew Stack.” I have updated his name in light of current consensus reporting.

Various new outlets are reporting that a plane intentionally crashed into an IRS building in Austin, Texas. While the details are still being uncovered, it appears that the man who owned the plane, Andrew Joseph Stack III, left an online manifesto detailing his decision.

It’s also claimed that Stack set his house on fire before crashing his plane.

Here is the reported manifesto of Joe Stack below. Draw your own conclusions.

If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Why did this have to happen?” The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time. The writing process, started many months ago, was intended to be therapy in the face of the looming realization that there isn’t enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken. Needless to say, this rant could fill volumes with example after example if I would let it. I find the process of writing it frustrating, tedious, and probably pointless… especially given my gross inability to gracefully articulate my thoughts in light of the storm raging in my head. Exactly what is therapeutic about that I’m not sure, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

We are all taught as children that without laws there would be no society, only anarchy. Sadly, starting at early ages we in this country have been brainwashed to believe that, in return for our dedication and service, our government stands for justice for all. We are further brainwashed to believe that there is freedom in this place, and that we should be ready to lay our lives down for the noble principals represented by its founding fathers. Remember? One of these was “no taxation without representation”. I have spent the total years of my adulthood unlearning that crap from only a few years of my childhood. These days anyone who really stands up for that principal is promptly labeled a “crackpot”, traitor and worse.

Breast Implants As A Terrorist Weapon?

The Detroit Free Press reports:

British intelligence agencies have reportedly monitored terrorist communications bragging that women suicide bombers have already undergone surgery to hide explosive bombs in their breast implants.

“You could certainly put a liquid of any kind in a saline device, and a gel implant theoretically could be opened and replaced with a different type of gel,” said Maryland plastic surgeon Dr. Craig Person.

“I believe that any liquid in a breast implant, or any gel with a silicone-type of implant would be hard to detect with a body scanner,” Person told 9NewsNow.
