Jeb Bush’s Vatican-Obama Conspiracy Theory

Jeb Bush tweetIt’s hard to remember sometimes, sitting in New York, that Jeb Bush is still capable of engaging the media, but apparently CBS Miami still has a soft spot for him, right down to his latest musings about President Obama, Obamacare, and the closing of the U.S. Embassy in the Vatican:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has not typically been one to repeat wild conspiracy theories in the past. But that’s exactly what he did this week when he repeated a wild story making the rounds on the fringes of the right wing.

“Why would our President close our Embassy to the Vatican?” Jeb Bush tweeted. “Hopefully, it is not retribution for Catholic organizations opposing Obamacare.”

There are several factual problems with the statement made by Bush, namely the United State isn’t closing its Embassy to the Vatican.

No foreign country has an embassy in Vatican City proper because there isn’t room.

Pope’s Retirement Linked To The Blackmailing Of A Circle Of Gay Vatican Officials, Reports Italian Press

I’m guessing the Vatican’s secret circle of gay cardinals are also superheroes. The Guardian reports:

A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay [high-ranking clergy] in the Vatican, some of whom were being blackmailed by outsiders. The pope’s spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report by the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica.

The paper said the pope had decided on December 17th that he was going to resign – the day he received a dossier compiled on the so-called “Vatileaks” affair. Pope Benedict’s butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and charged with having stolen and leaked papal correspondence.

A quotation said some Vatican officials had been subject to “external influence” from laymen with whom they had links of a “worldly nature” — a reference to blackmail. La Repubblica‘s report was the latest in a string of claims that a gay network exists in the Vatican.

Ratzinger Resigns – First Pope To Quit Since 1415

Nearly 600 years have elapsed since a sitting Roman Catholic Pope last resigned. As accustomed as we are to Vatican intrigue, one wonders if the official story of Pope Benedict’s deteriorating health is the real reason that the man formerly known as Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger is on his way out. From Sky News:

Pope Benedict XVI is to resign on February 28 due to his “deteriorating” health.

He will be the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to resign in almost 600 years, with his departure expected to leave the post vacant for around three weeks.

The 85-year-old German’s resignation letter said: “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

“I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

Secret Papers, The Occult, Freemasonry In Pope’s Butler’s Trial

Reuters has some tantalizing tidbits from the start of the criminal trial of the pope’s former butler. The whole affair, concerning the leaking of the pope’s secret papers revealing deep-seeded corruption at the Vatican Bank and other internal scandal, is confirming some of the conspiracy theories pertaining to the Catholic Church:

Pope Benedict’s former butler stole highly sensitive papers the pontiff had marked “to be destroyed” and compromised Vatican security through his actions, the Holy See’s police told his trial on Wednesday.

On the third day of Paolo Gabriele’s trial, testimony depicted a man fascinated by the occult, Masonic lodges, secret services and past Italian and Vatican scandals.

“You can understand our unease when we saw these documents. This was a total violation of the privacy of the papal family,” said police agent Stefano De Santis, one of the four agents who said they found the papers in Gabriele’s home, using a Vatican term for the pope’s closest aides.

The Shady Past of the Vatican Bank

As scandal surrounding the Vatican Bank grows and grows, Der Spiegel looks back at the its recent history of extreme sketchiness:

Whereas Benedict XVI and his predecessors have preached humility and ethical financial dealings from the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, his confidants working directly beneath the papal windows have continued to pursue shady financial transactions.

The Vatican has yet to divulge the business practices its bank has been using for decades. “There is fear that, owing to the transparency necessary today, one will find something in the past that one doesn’t want to,” says Marco Politi, a Rome-based Vatican expert.

Such things could include a complex system of ghost accounts and shell companies like the bank had when Archbishop Paul Casimir Marcinkus was its head in the 1980s. At the time, the bank did business involving foreign currency and weapons with the Milanese banker Robert Calvi and the mafia financier Michele Sidona — and helped launder illegal proceeds the mafia earned from drug-trafficking as well as bribes paid to Christian-conservative Italian politicians.

Why, in such instances, is it always the trusted butler? Pope Ratzinger’s close confidante could be imprisoned in the Vatican for 30 years for revealing financial cronyism to the world. Via the Telegraph:

Vatican police have arrested Pope Benedict XVI’s personal butler following an investigation into the leaking of sensitive church documents as the Vatican still tries to recover from the priest sex abuse scandal. [It is] the first time in years the Vatican jail had been used.

The butler, identified as Paolo Gabriele, 40, was held by gendarmes after a special commission of three top senior cardinals had been appointed by the Pope to identify the source of the leaks. Mr Gabriele, who has been at the Pope’s side for six years, is one of the German born pontiff’s closest members of his inner circle which totals just four lay people and four nuns.

The documents show how contracts were awarded to favoured companies and individuals and also highlight allegations of internal power struggles with the Vatican’s bank known as the Institute for Religious Works…
