What should policymakers do in the aftermath of this kind of event? Nothing. This is a singular event, and not something that should drive policy. Unfortunately, you can’t prevent this sort of thing 100 percent.
By definition, news is something that almost never happens. The brain fools you into thinking the news is what’s important. So what should we be afraid of? Car crashes. Global warming. It feels insensitive to say it so close to the tragedy, but it’s true. Things so common that they’re no longer news — that’s what kills people.
The damage from terrorism is primarily emotional. To the extent this terrorist attack succeeds has very little do with the attack itself. Imagine if the bombs were found and moved at the last second, and no one died, but everyone was just as scared.

The dark side of zodiac compatibility tests, via the South Florida Sun Sentinel:
A Lauderhill man told a bizarre tale of needing to find a victim who had a Taurus zodiac sign when he described the fatal Easter Sunday stabbing of his live-in girlfriend to police, authorities said Monday.
Darrius Johnson, 22, stabbed Monica Gooden, 20, multiple times early Sunday at their residence, according to his statements recorded in a Lauderhill police complaint affidavit.
Johnson told police the victim had control over his spirit and that the couple had fought over his wanting a relative to live with them, the affidavit states. Police said that Johnson also told them he “sacrificed” the victim for his and her betterment, and that he knew he had to sacrifice someone with a Taurus astrological sign, the report states.
Beware the purple cloth. Fox News reports:
The disappearances of nearly 40 dogs from southern Idaho is baffling authorities and raising concerns after dogs were found dead under mysterious circumstances, with one found with its head crushed in a suspected ritual killing.
Nearly 40 dogs have been reported missing since November in an agricultural region in south-central Idaho known as the Magic Valley. “The dogs seem to vanish into thin air,” said animal shelter director Debbie Blackwood.
Authorities grew even more concerned after a German shepherd was found apparently stoned to death earlier this month. Blackwood says the dog appeared to have suffered a “ritualistic execution,” in which its head was crushed with rock and its carcass covered with a purple cloth.

A Henrico County judge Thursday scheduled a two-day trial in June for an aspiring rap star who, according to a prosecutor, apparently believed that he had to sacrifice his friend to reach stardom.
“You are my sacrifice,” El-Amin [was] quoted as saying before he allegedly fired a shot toward his friend’s head inside a Henrico home that was to become a music studio. The trial will delve into the hip-hop music culture and the notion that a secret society called the Illuminati has control over the success of some performers.
It was the belief that a sacrifice had to occur in order to join the Illuminati that allegedly incited El-Amin. Investigators recovered more than a pound of marijuana from the Athens Avenue home, according to the search warrant, as well as literature dealing with the Illuminati and its alleged connection to the music industry.
At the intersection of paranoia and random violence lies high school. CBS Chicago reports:
A school shooting drill planned on Wednesday in Chicago’s northwestern suburbs has many parents upset.
According to a letter from Cary-Grove High School principal Jay Sargeant, there will be a code red drill at the school that will include somebody shooting blanks from a gun in the hallway “in an effort to provide our teachers and students some familiarity with the sound of gunfire.”
During the drill, teachers will keep students in their rooms, lock their doors, and draw their curtains. Police will sweep the building, while someone will fire blanks from a starter pistol.
School spokesman Jeff Puma said parents who have contacted the school are evenly split for and against the drill. Parent Sharon Miller said the drill is absurd, [while] Dina Coutre said, “Nowadays it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons, or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?”
– Job 38:31
Despite how one feels about God, or how one defines God, or if God even exists at all, the idea that He needs defense seems a bit weird.
In the quote at the beginning of this post, we see God asking Job if he could change the nature of constellations. Why is this important? The God of the Bible is saying that he was in control of everything. If God plainly says he is in control, then why does he need defending? Why is it that we see him giving a mandate to the Israelites for genocide in the Old Testament?… Read the rest
“Tens of thousands are being murdered, and over a million are being forced to flee their homes. U.S. laws and policy play a major role in the conflict’s violence. This video is about understanding the complexities of the war and why it is happening.”
The tragedy of American mass shootings inspires terrible choices. Regarding the president’s move to encourage the further policification of schools, Unprison writes:

The 18th Executive Order signed by President Obama is to provide incentives (and funding) for schools to have police oversee the children. This will create results.
School police, known as “Resource Officers” (perhaps for easier digestion) have been key builders of the School to Prison Pipeline. The fistfights and the joint in the bathroom do not result in detention or suspension anymore: now they are imprisonment, expulsion, and an often insurmountable mountain to climb towards any “normal” adult lifestyle.
A 2011 report by Justice Police Institute [suggests] that the overall damage to a community is not justified by the vague possibility that the school is safer. In fact, there are indications that the police actually lead to increased violence in schools.
Children have been the fastest growing segment in the industry of prisoners.
Police Mortality is Anti-Banality’s latest wish-fulfillment symptomology of, as one character hallucinates it, “a precisely formulated national conspiracy of police genocide.” It is a paranoid-schizophrenic blitz against police subjectivity, skimmed off nearly 200 movies by that other social superego–Hollywood. In this opening scene, the immaculate suicide of one LAPD officer begins to reveal the contradictions of police existence to a force which, finding itself multiply irreconcilable with itself, resorts to terminal civil war, eradicating the prevailing organization of life in the process.
