China’s Nightmarish Citizen Scores Are a Warning For Americans

China is launching a comprehensive “credit score” system, and the more I learn about it, the more nightmarish it seems. China appears to be leveraging all the tools of the information age—electronic purchasing data, social networks, algorithmic sorting—to construct the ultimate tool of social control. It is, as one commentator put it, “authoritarianism, gamified.” Read this piece for the full flavor—it will make your head spin. If that and the little other reporting I’ve seen is accurate, the basics are this:

  • Everybody is measured by a score between 350 and 950, which is linked to their national identity card. While currently supposedly voluntary, the government has announced that it will be mandatory by 2020.
  • The system is run by two companies, Alibaba and Tencent, which run all the social networks in China and therefore have access to a vast amount of data about people’s social ties and activities and what they say.

Not one to take the possibility of being harvested as human cattle lightly, Art Greenfield (not to be confused with Allen Greenfield) is on a mission to warn the world with his aptly titled publication:


I discovered this anti-reptoid prophet when he jumped into a LinkedIn message board conversation I had been following in order to learn more about the noted parapsychologist Barry Taff’s latest book, Aliens Above, Ghosts Below.

Perhaps due to the title of Taff’s book, Greenfield felt called to post a lengthy series of spontaneous missives, and excerpts from his own book, expounding on the well worn notion that society has been infiltrated by ancient alien ‘repto-sapiens’ hungry for human flesh. As one person put it, Greenfield contributed to the conversation “a book…in one night.” However, they added diplomatically that, “nobody is listening to this ‘outer limits’ conjecture.” A less diplomatic poster expressed his opinion that nobody wanted to engage Greenfield’s “awful drivel.”

Many citizens across Asia have been warned about faux messages being sent, such as this e-mail: “Japan Government confirms radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. If rain comes, remain indoors first 24 hours. Close doors and windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precautions. Radiation may hit Philippine at around 4 pm today. If it rains today or in the next few days in Hong Kong. Do not go under the rain. If you get caught out, use an umbrella or raincoat, even if it is only a drizzle. Radioactive particles, which may cause burns, alopecia or even cancer, may be in the rain.” BBC reports:

A fake text message warning people that radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant has leaked beyond Japan has been panicking people across Asia.
